how do i know if an overheating is damaging my chipset - the northbridge mainly?
 
Generally, there won't be enough heat to damage the chipset, assuming you have a couple good case fans circulating air properly. But cooling the motherboard chipset, especially the northbridge chip, helps with higher FSB stability and might help prolong the life of the chips.
