I'v read up on DDR ram, 1600, 2100, and the new 2400... but I dont fully understand...

here is my issue, I am building a new comp... here are my specs:
a7m266 Asus mobo
1.4 AMD (200)
512 Muskin Ram (DDR 2400 2 x 256)
Geforce 2
Netcard
Sound Card
Maxtor HD
etc etc etc.

I got the AMD 1.4 (200) so I have more room for overclocking... and I got the 2400 DDR ram... now if I can get my amd 1.4 (200) up to say 266 which would be a awesome 1800 mhz computer, will my 2400 DDR only be running @ 266 and thus be the exact same as 2100 ram? Did I waste my money going with 2400?

Most motherboards, the A7M included I believe, let you set the RAM speed independently of the FSB.

1.8G is pretty optimistic, you'll need exceptional cooling and a bit of luck.

LOL I just realized that the athlon 1.4's at 100mhz fsb have a multiplyer of 14! Thats really high! All you have to do is bump up the fsb 33mhz??? I would think every 1.4 would do it then! Thats not such a huge o/c as i thought... and it would gain you 400mhz!! wowzers :-D

I say try to get just 1 stick of 512 mb. Not 2, because they may run at different speeds, blah blah blah, and mess up more than just one stick would if you plan to raise the FSB on it.

Bobby Manus- It isn't that easy. Like FRANK said, you would need some heavy duty cooling. Just look in the cpu database and see how many 1.4s are at 1800.

HaM- He doesn't have to worry about the memory modules not being able to handle the fsb. He has a 200mhz fsb

To answer the question, I wouldn't think of it as a waste because, in the future you could get a chip that uses pc2400 and you wouldn't have to upgrade your memory.

Something you could do is lower the multiplier and raise the fsb until it be comes unstable. This way you might be able to geat some use out of the extra space you have with that memory.

oh, you might want to post a ram question in the memory forum next time because the admins have to deal with alot of post that are put in the wrong section. It's not a really big deal but they like to put emphasis on this and it would do good for the forum
