Mark, I know they are cheaper in relation to other 64Bit chips and I know that the Opteron was designed to go against the Xeon and other server chips. I just hope the A64 is much cheaper, which I am sure it will be after it matures for a short while.

Yeah, see the thing is that the same kind of people who said "who needs 32-bit? who needs PCI? who needs AGP?" will be the people who are saying "who needs 64-bit". That's what i have my problem with. Just because they can't find a use for it doesn't mean no one else will.

I would take the 3000xp, no question about it. Then I wouldn't have to spend upwards of 200 dollars on a new Intel board and heatsink. Probably new ram too, because you can only overclock with FSB on Intel's.

Of course I respect your response, but I can't help but scratch my head. Why would you have to spend $200 on a motherboard and heatsink?? Last time I checked AMD CPU's need heatsinks too..;) Both CPU's come with a heatsink in the retail box. And you can have a dual DDR intel board for much less than $140 bucks.. Yes the 875P is more, because it JUST came out.. just like when the Nforce 2 just came out it was much more.

I just hope you know that for paying the same price of both chips $450 The Pentium4 3GHz C is FASTER than a AMD 3000XP. I haven't seen not one review say otherwise. Check out some reviews and see for yourself... I'm not making this stuff up. A AMD 3200XP is much closer to a Pentium 4 3GHz C.. But guess what? IT COST MORE STILL than a Pentium 4 3GHz C.. that's nuts.

Doesnt that then blow your initial argument out of the water? (AMD is a budget user cpu). Besides do you think Opterons are for budget users? I think you need to look at segmentation strategy a bit more before coming up with such a sweeping statement that AMD is a budget user cpu.

Well buddy, (i just can't stop responding to this troll)
1. Both CPU's aren't the same price, so your argument is moot.
2. The 3200+ is rated faster. AMD can charge whatever they feel like. You don't like it? Well, don't buy it!
3. I'm done with this thread.

1. I said for me, I would get the AMD, because I already have a board and heatsink for it! Many other people are in that situation as well.
2. Nforce2 was nowhere near canterwood prices when it came out. 8rda+'s are less than 100 right now and are pretty much top of the line as far as overclocking and features as well. Canterwoods will not be under 100 for like a year or two. I also would not say Nforce2's were "much more" than they are now.
3. I already conceded that it is probably faster. But now that I think about it, how do you think they would both do if compared in boards that were the same price.
4. Firstly, I already said why I don't care about the highend stuff. But just for you... the 3200+ and 3.0 differ by less than 10% of their respective prices.

[edit]5. Stock heatsink? This is overclockers.com!

oh ok, of course if you have a motherboard and heatsink, then it's a different situation. And I never USE STOCK heatsinks..hahaha

would you guys stop arguing? it's not going anywhere. intel is great for someone who buys a computer and does nothing but install software and check e-mail. amd is great for someone who wants more out of their computer. unfortunately, most programs (especially from MS) are optimized to an extent for intel chips. this is the only reason amd and intel are not perfectly even in market share. for example, hyper threading. certain programs are designed to use it to their advantage. why do you think amd added sse support to their xp line? they had no choice because software companies were making their programs to take advantage of intel features. intel started before amd so intel already had market advantage. software companies weren't dumb. they optimized their stuff for the main cpu out there so their programs would run more efficient than the competitions. if you notice, with the release of ut2003, programs are now starting to be optimized for amd cpus. perhaps the tide will continue to change. for now, i recommend amd to my customers solely based on price/performance ratio.

Intel can't have AMD die on them. If they did they would most certainly have the DoJ after them for Monopolistic activities. Also Intel makes money off of AMD. They have the patent on the x86 architecture and AMD has to pay to use it. But as everyone knows the AMD engineers always seem to make more of what they have. Not that the Intel engineers are stupid, they come up with the SSE stuff, but AMD has managed to get more work done per cycle. If the AMD and Intel cpu's were the same price I'd still go AMD. I like the option of being able to adjust the multiplier and fsb, not just fsb.

And I will never buy a CPU for more than $100- 125... Don't need 3.0 GHz right now... $60 will get you 2.0+ GHz OCed, with AMD.
