I have a Compaq 1690 notebook with a amd-k6-2 400mhz processor will any socket 7 cpu work for example AMD-K6®-III 550mhz is there a difference between a notebook cpu and a desktop cpu other than the heat sink and fan?I want to go with the AMD-K6®-III but not sure if the cooling is the same.PLEASE HELP thanks Rick

Any K6-2 or K6-3 will fit but it might not work properly. The laptop versions of these chips are identical but they run at a lower voltage. Some laptops have dipswitches to change the voltage but you will probably be stuck at 2.0v or whatever the default is. I think your laptop has multiplier and FSB dipswitches but I'm not 100% sure. If I'm correct AMD even had a K6-2 600 on a .18u process so you may want to look into that. The worst part about upgrading is removing the CPU since that style Compaq doesn't use a ZIF socket.

The K6+ chips were made to be mobile. Overclockers found out that they could run them on desktop SS7 boards. They are the best K6's ever produced. The K6-3+ 450's oc'd to 600, but AMD never made an actual 600 socket 7. They run at 2v. core, but I'm not sure about a vanilla K6 mobile chip.

Find out if Sisoft Sandra can evaluate the system. It might be able to give you some info. Or goto the manufacturer's site.

Tiger Direct have K6-2+ 450's for $35.00. With 128kb on die level 2 cache, they are much better than any standard K6. A standard K6-3 is still using the .24 micron process, so they run much hotter, and use more power than the + series with the .18.

personally i thought they made k6-2 on .25 and then the last line of them were made on .21... correct me if im wrong but I believe thats what the amd website says/said
