Please can anyone advise me in basic terms how to overclock the above processor, The mobo is a:-

531CF /3d agp vga / 2d audio

Don't know this mobo. But it doesn't matter.

First step :
You only have to increase clock multiplier to 5.5 and increase voltage from stock 2.2v to 2.3v or 2.4v to keep it stable.
Caution : you must have proper cooling. Standart heatsink and fan can't do the job.

Using thermal paste in place of the thermal pad is necessary to have a good thermal transfer between CPU and heatsink.
Case cooling can help too : add case fans for having a good air flow inside the case.

Second step :
If your mobo has settings for FSB > 100 and if you can get your system stable at 550, then you can try 5x112 = 560. This will give performance near to 6x100 (with 2x=6x remapping)

If you wan't to overclock it a bit more, you can apply lapping to CPU and heatsink to enhance thermal interface.
Don't expect to break the 600 limit. It is possible but it's a big challenge.

I can't get mine to do anything. I have a ASUS P5S-VM mobo with 192Mb of pc100. multiplier X5 at FSB of 100. I've tried every combination to get this thing to do something. I come up empty every time. The only thing that I've gotten it to do is I've increased vcore to 2.4. I've tried multiplier 5.5....I even tried 4.5 with FSB at 105, 110, 120, 133....still nothing. What am I doing wrong?

I have read some posts where people had problems with K6-2 500/550 and Asus P5A, even at stock speed. You should ask for other experiences with this mobo and CPU combination.

I have to push mine to 2.7v to get it to run stable at 600 2x100, and had to lap it to get there. Extreme cooling (open case and extra fans) is necessary to run it at 600. Since lapping it though it runs 5.5x100 at only 2.2v default.

Make sure to get rid of as many auto loading programs as you possibly can.
