well i was wanting to get a 3800+ X2 but cant afford it.
So ive narrowed it down to either a Intel dual core (P4 D 830) or an Amd Single core(amd athlon 64 3500+)

what are you going to be doing? the AMD will be better if you game, but if you encode stuff or do rendering your gonna want to go intel.

Also, the Pentium D's are supposed to have DRM chips built in. If you don't know, DRM stands for "Disabling your Rights via Micro$oft" :p

im going to be both gaming and using say maya, 3ds max, photoshop etc.

And what exactly does DRM do?

Ive figured out my three options (the amd dual core is what i really want but parents say its too much maybe even the intel D is too much also but what do you think?)

AMD Dual core parts: costs $800
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2
G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
REFURBISHED: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
PNY GeForce 7800 GT 256MB PCI Express SLI Video Card
Ultra X-Finity 600 Watt Power Supply

Intel Dual Core parts: costs $745
Intel Pentium D 820 Smithfield
CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 675 (PC2 5400)
ASUS P5ND2-SLI Socket T (LGA 775) Nvidia nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition
PNY GeForce 7800 GT 256MB PCI Express SLI Video Card
Ultra X-Finity 600 Watt Power Supply

Amd Single Core parts: costs $649
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice
G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
REFURBISHED: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
PNY GeForce 7800 GT 256MB PCI Express SLI Video Card

Basically, it determines what you can and cannot do with your computer. It sends back information about your files to the government/corporations and can delete your files if it thinks they're "illegal." The features in the Pentium D won't take effect completely until Windows Vista is released, but still... DRM will just be a burden to people who don't download warez and junk, while the hackers will find a way around it. And for your needs, an AMD would be better anyway.

... pardon me Do you mind if i Say WTF that is privacy infringement. If im not mistaken that seems highly illegal to me and its just another step towards a uniformed united states. They dont have the right to see whats on our computer. Another reason why i would like to leave america

Exactly why I'm moving to Canada when I turn 18. But ocforums doesn't seem to like politics, so let's get back to the original topic before this gets closed like the other DRM thread a while back.

Nice lol i'm 17 in my senior year at HS i to will be going to college for networking/Sys admin :)

Go for the AMD Dual Core if you can, definitely best choice up there.

You might want to consider a different PSU while OCing, the Forton AX500-A should be fine, and maybe the OCZ Powerstream520 is a overkill.

If you must stick with AMD single core, the Opteron 144 or 146 are looking nice, more cache and more OCability.

I'm 17 also and a senior and as you see going to a university. My bachelors degree will be in network and communication technologies. how odd were like brothers? you dont live in tx? You dont happen to be taking the Cisco networking acadmey? for CCNA!?!?

well the reason im going with that psu is because it comes in a combo along with the video card and COD2 for $300. No way i could pass that deal up. This is not my psu of choice but for practically free.... Why not? when i can get a better psu later. This one shall be suffice. I have decided to take Intel D off my list no way i will support that BS theyre trying to pull... I would love to get the dual core but its just a tad bit out of my price range...

Canada is pretty nice I must say. It's funny, the government is considered more socialistic, but MP3 downloading is legal, marrying the same sex is legal. Hell they are even seriously considering making weed legal. BTW, I live in Canada

What is this thread about?

Since you said you do both you must decide where you are willing to sacrifice.

I'd go with the AMD system, I don't know how well a DC setup will perform for encoding, aside from being able to do other things, but I think AMD is really on the ball right now.

Then post it in your profile, with pride!

Nope lol i live on LongIsland N.Y.

The intel dual core - dispite the DRM will pretty much own the competition in multithread apps... but there realy arnt that many of those out there these days.

The AMD is better for gaming, and a dual core AMD is kinda like a little of the best of both.... Go with the dual core AMD if i were you.

Whatever you do, don't put that intel chip on that nVidia board .

If you're going to run stock I'd go with the X2 3800+. If you were going to get some decent cooling and overclock I'd lean towards the 820D, but on a P5WD2.

A P5WD2 would make the intel system the same price as the AMD system, if that helps at all.

ya thanks for the help... I'd really love to get the dual core AMD but money is the issue and i will save about $200 going with a 3200+... so im not sure

im pretty sure im going the amd single core but heres some other ram im considering:
mushkin High-Performance 1GB (2 x 512MB)
CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB)
OCZ Performance Series 1GB (2 x 512MB)
Crucial Ballistix 1GB (2 x 512MB)

all under $120
