Another Nvidia Refugee Applying for Asylum

Ok, i've made up my mind and what's left of my mind wants me to replace my 4600 gf4 with an ATi vid card, but WHICH ONE?

I've narrowed my choices down to:

1. the sapphire 9500np that can be modded? which one is it precisely and is it almost a sure thing? what will it become after the mod?

2. the fic 9700np that runs like a 9800 according to some of you?

3. a 9700pro (real ati 299 bucks at bestbuy or a tyan for 329 at micropro)

4. Any other choice you gurus believe is better than the other 3 choices above.

Am i on the right track? HEEEELLLLP!

1. These are getting harder and harder to find. It is far from a sure thing. If you get the correct 9500np then it should mod to a 9700np. However, there are many cases in which this fails. If you get teh wrong 9500 then yo could mod it to a 9500Pro.

2. Its a great card for 230$, but I doubt it runs like a 9800. Unless they are talking about the driver mod to use the 9800 optimizations.

3. A great choice, but perhaps a little expensive.

If you're looking for a moddable 9500np, you need a red PCB one (looks exactly like a 9700). No other cards will work.

If i remember right, the otheres still mod, just not to a 9700 ;)

Anyways, on topic, dont bother going with the mod. There is no garauntee it will work, and then your left with a card thats worse then the one you have now.

RL has seen my opinion on this but i would like to address this comment.

look at the driver and look at the core/mem speeds.
the driver is the dell 3.3cat
and both the core/mem speeds exceed stock 9800pro speeds.

now how in the world does this not run like a 9800pro?
granted a stock 9800pro as an oced one would blow it away.
also ill point out im the only one who has done this but i did it on 2 fic's so until someone else buys one im kinda standing on my own.

ill still say the ati built 9700pro for $299 is a good deal if my route doesnt seem the most sensable.and i can see to some why the doubt as it is pretty amazing.

i hear you! :) my 4600 isnt so bad where i want to blow 200-250 for something that doesnt work as well, BUT deathstar makes a very CONVINCING argument also. his numbers are amazing and he's duplicated his results. i'm afraid to gamble but the fic 9700 seems like it might be worth taking a chance.

i agree that getting a card anticipating a successful mod isnt the way i want to get into a new vid card. this doesnt have the same appeal to me as getting a great o/c on a cpu, but i can understand why the modders are enjoying the results of their efforts when successful!

:D
