Antec Tru Control 550 w/out the control panel

I recently upgraded my dual amd PSU to a pcpower cooling 510 atx+6 and wanted to use my older antec tru con 550 on my single amd sys. I dont have an extra 5.25 opening for the control panel, could the psu work without it?

The PSU will not work properly without the panel. You can, however, unscrew the PCB with the potentiometers on it from the 5.25" bay housing. It is small enough that you could tuck it away some where inside the computer. You might want to stick the PCB in a small project box, or shrink wrap the whole thing if you can find some big enough. You don't want it shorting on the metal in the case. ;)

Note: TrueControl consists of two parts: The TruePower power supply and the
control panel. This special power supply must be used with the panel to control
the voltages and the fan speed. The adjustment range is ±5% of the specified
voltages. You may use the power supply without connecting the panel however
doing so will automatically set the power supply to 95% of voltage spec. to
prevent unwanted higher output voltages.

Amazing you should say this, I don't call 95% working. That not enough for me to get the system booted in windows. The system will start but isn't stable enough to boot anything.
 
In that case you can connect the control panel, adjust the voltages and then disconnect it (assuming that you don't want to use the panel all the time). You don't actually have to mount the control panel.

It's set lower to avoid over-volting anything, which is typically a lot worse to do then under-volting. Also that's within the 5% that the ATX specification calls for.

Hrmm.....Not to question the all mighty antec rep, but are you sure the rails stay the same once you adjust them via the control panel then disconnect it? I've had some problems with the wires staying connected & I am made completely aware of it when they come loose because my system becomes unstable & the rails dive bomb. But it doesn't really matter that the wires come loose, same concept as disconnecting the panel.

I'm more less wondering because I've had a heck of a time rewiring/resoldering the control panel over the past 6+ months. I finally got it to work, I just stripped all the wires & soldered them directly to the back of the control panel (where the white plug connects to the pcb). Both white connectors are bare & all is working fine, just curious, cause then I would have wasted a lot of time.
 
Honestly I don't know. I don't use a TC550 myself and I don't know that anyone here has tried it. I'll see if I can get an 'official' answer.

It doesn't keep the rails at what you set them at. They reset to the lowest setting which is like 4.3-4.5 volts for the 5 line to give you an idea.

If anyone has seen the Sense line mods for the Truepowers, the front panel is the same thing. The pots in the panel do the same adjustments. Without them they go back to their own sense lines and try to keep them at really low levels.
 
Wow, I get a RTM from AntecRep. :p I wasn't aware that the manual said that. I RTMed about a year ago when I got it. Heh.

The reason I said it wouldn't work is because I have seen a couple of accounts where people didn't connect the front panel and the voltages would be too low. Just like Tebore described.
 
Yup I just got an email from one of our tech guys saying I was wrong. Sorry about that.

how accurate is mbm5 in monitoring this?? im gettin the +5 at 3.15 the +12 at 11.00 the -12 at -4.25 and the -5 at 0. the 3.3 is at 2.85. i have no idea what any of this means though. the rates given are the average for all.

If your system runs then MBM5 is just screwed up or the motherboard readings are screwed up.

It isnt very accurate, try using a digital meter, it is possible(seen proof on these forums before anyone says anything) that your computer runs with those voltages if they are true, but it won't be very stable.
