I was just about ready to order a geforce fx 5900 non-ultra when I started seeing people talk about the nv40 and the r400 or whatever. Does anybody have any information about these two cards and reasons why I should wait to buy one of these types. Thanks.

Oh yeah, how do I check how many posts I have and how do I get an avatar?

9800's are the current cards to get.

The newer cards won't be seen until February, maybe later.

What will the estimated price of the R420 be when it comes out? I am building a PC soon and was gonna go for the 9800XT but may just hold off on everything if the next gen vid cards come out as early as Feb.

probably april and why are you getting a 9800xt when nearly all pros overclock to xt speeds for much less $$$$$$$$

Maybe he wants the hardware monitoring.

Since my experience with this last ati card has been so bad, I was looking at getting an nvidia since I have never had any problems with them. Anyways if i did get an ati card and if it didn't work on a clean install of windows xp on a new hard drive like I just did it would really upset me. But, I am thinking of getting a nforce2, athlon xp 2500+ or 2700+, pc3200 ram, but what video card should I get? What will be so special about the nv40 or r420?

no one really know for sure yet, neither have released any info to my knowledge. and i would say you are making a mistake about not getting the ati because of a past experience, but it is up to you. i have never had any problems with ati, but i have with nvidia, every company has problems. ati cards are superior to nv cards. im not trying to sway you to ati, i am just saying that you could very well get a bad nv product just as easily as you can get a bad ati product.

I never had a problem with neither ati nor nvidia, but I dont like their fx cards so if you go Nvidia get the ti4200. if you go ati, get a 9800.

the r420 and nv40 should cost about 600 bucks

pretty much but if he cant live without aa/af the ti4200 wasnt made for that also he gets dx9 which will help with IQ in tomorrows games

I have heard the rumor of Radeon 10000 since the days of Radeon 8500/Geforce 3. R420 is only Radeon 9900 right? They just love to start making advertisement long before they even start to design the cards.

I personally am tired of the radeon name. use a different name, darn it!

And nVidia should call their cards something other than GeForce. Yeah, right.

calling it a paperweight is an offense to poor paper ;) what about doorstop or is that an offense to doors too? LOL

Id just get the 9800 Pro

Just guessing here, But the r420 will probably be Maybe 20% faster than the XT? For Twice the price or more than a 9800Pro? When you can OC a pro to XT speeds. Thats a no brainer, Get the Pro and OC it an Bask in all its glory. If you willing to spend money for a r420 or whatever, Dont even think of getting a 4200. Thats just crazy, and bad advice. Get the 9800Pro. And spend your money elsewhere on like some Crazy Ram, or other upgrades. Heck, even on Games to go with your new 9800pro.

20% my jumping jacks! ati has specified itll be over 50% faster and its easy twice the speed of the 9700 pro. dude, you know how long and hard ati worked on the r420? that beast is gonna have a whopping 12 pipelines, thats alone 50% over a 9800xt plus itll be clocked higher for sure and have other hardware core enhancements. It had better be over 50% faster than a 9800xt
