I've narrowed down my problems (I hope) to my vidcard. I've noticed when I play a game that'll use 3dgrfx it'll lock up. The sound stays on so I figure it's not my cpu or sound card. Has anyone ever had this kind of problem with a geforce2? Any kind of help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

specs:

900 Athlon
393ram
geforce2 mx 32mb
sb live value
middle tower case
20g hd

what brand?
do a more complete setup for signature, that will help.(see mine)need mobo name and #.also what watt psu.are ther any other lockups?

sorry i cut off the end.
first check the drivers and update them.if your cpu is overclocked back off a bit.this could also be an sb issue, try changing pci slots around leaving #1 open.if you have a 686b chip you may need the bug fix.are you having ANY other probs?did you try upping the i/o voltage?

I'm sorry.... I have a leadtek geforce2. How do I check if I have a 686b?? And if I do where do I get the updates? and here's more detailed on my specs (I'm just gonna copy from the reciept).

AMD Thunderbird k7 900 (I thought it was an athlon ?? guess I was wrong)
MSI k7t Pro2A Kt133
32x64 256 pc133 sdram
Acer CD656 56x ide rom (I think somethings wrong with this one too)
IBM 20g
3com 56k modem
sb live value
enlighten en 7237/3 middle tower
sony 1.44 floppy

Well, that's as much info as I can provide... don't know the wattage either, but I can find out. any help is greatly appreciated man! please!!! :)

I should have read your post more closely...

Lockups are usually caused by an overheated GPU (the video card's chip). Otherwise, it's a drivers issue.

In your case I would figure it to be a drivers issue since it's only happening with 3d/games (like UT?? please be more specific). You didn't mention overclocking your card, so heat probably isn't the issue.

What set of drivers are you using and which ones have you tried? Most people use the 12.90, I personally use the 12.00 problem free.

i think this is a case of the sound card and the vidcard perhaps sharing an irq, because i had this problem and so have many others. and if your running a via chipset you need to download the 686 bugfix from via. the sblive's have a comparability problem with via 686 series chipsets

My video card isn't overclocked. But now that you mention the sound card, I remember when I first set up my comp, I would play a game (black and white) and it would lock up. after I updated my soundcard it didn't do it. On another game, however, it my comp would lock up all the time. The game was Dues Ex and most of the time it would lock up. Now, I have a silly question or two, how do I know what set of drivers I'm running? Do I check it in my computer--> control panel-->system ? As for the vid and soundcard sharing IRQ how do I check/remedy that?

Worm you are in big trouble.
I suggest you to by some book like "Windows 98 step by step" or more recently use F1 key and read some help.

I have similar problems with my GeForce256. I play *ALOT* of UT. I'm talking 7 hours a day. The game crashes alot (Respectively; remember, I do play 7 hours a day). I find that after a nice restart and some time to cool off, it takes longer before problems occur. It's a damn shame it DOES crash up though. I'll get 24/25 frags, then I'll have to start all over when I get back into the game.

(Did I mention that only the game will crash? Not the while computer. No freezing, no artifacts, the program just cuts out.)

to check the irq's simply right click on your my computer icon and select properties. then when the system window pops up click on the device manager tab at the top. then look at the list. double click on the icon labled computer and it will show you all your irq's and if there is a shared irq more then one device on the list will show the same number. it is ok to have some shared irq's but you dont want any ones shared with the graphics card, and preferebly the sound card

which slot is sound card in did you try moving it?when you checked irq's were they sharing?(changing pci slots would fix that)
