The last card I had was an 8500le and it had no mounting screws so to take the heatsink off I had to use a hairdryer. This new 9800 i bought, when flashed to xt, reveals very high temps. I cannot buy a vga silencer right now because they are out of stock here in canada (bigfoot computers). This card has mounting pins with springs and a shim.

Can I just take out the pins, scrape off the old stuff, apply as5 and just stick the heatsink back on? Or do i need a hairdryer and some epoxy? Does the shim pose any complications? And finally, is it worth it?

Thanks in advance.

you mean you want to put AS5 with the stock heatsink?
All you need to do is use some rubbing alcohol and whipe the old paste off. then put as5 on, and then you just put the heatsink back on.

Alright then I guess I'll do that. I was worried if it had more then just the bolts keeping it on.

Nope, you should be able to squeeze the ends of the pins together with a tweezer or something and the HS will come right off. The shim will be at the same height as the core, so there's no need to worry about that either. Just apply a little bit of AS5 and put the HS back on :)

I just did it. It lowered the temps maybe 2 degrees and in a few days it might go down a degree or two more. The best thing though is that I don't get artifacts at 412 on car demo anymore regardless of the temps.

Well i got an xt pcb and core with a pro bios. Flashed to xt and then i have an 9800xt with temp monitoring. ;)

I was bored. Besides Im a "master" overclocker and I can hear the hardware talking to me telling me to take off the heatsink. :sn:

lol jks.
