arctic silver help

I have a volcano 7. I'm thinking about taking off the black pad that comes with it. i would like to use artic silver. what is the proper method of apply thermal compound? How do I make sure that it is even and that there will be no air pockets?

I don't get it, don't they apply TOO much on the chip? i only apply one very thin layer on my chip, and that is it! i mean, too much of ASIII equals No ASIII!

Nah, if you put too much on, it squeezes out under the mating pressure of the heatsink base and the core, along with the heat of the core. It may take a little longer for the base to settle down into its final resting position, but it certainly is not detrimental. Obviously, if you ladle it on like peanut butter, once it displaces, it could run down upon the cpu substrate.
