I have a problem with this company, who for now will remain un-named.
It seems as if they're trying to dupe me into buying their spyware removal software by doing crazy things to my computer. (IE: writing things to notepad, forcing an eject command on one of my cd-rom drives, blocking out pages in IE6, etc)
The funny thing is, i'm running win98se as my main OS, and it doesn't show up in XP (or hasn't shown up, yet).
If anyone has seen or heard of this problem, and/or has corrective measures for it, i'd really appreciate the help.

PoX

BTW, both OSes use the same IE6 from the same folder (installed win98se without the browser and used the one from XP)

Sounds more like a trojan horse than spyware to me. Have you tried running Ad-Aware or Spybot? If so, and you've come up empty handed, try a few trojan removers, too.

I run PCCillin 2001 with the most recent updated virus list (12-26-03), and i have tried using things like Hijackthis and other messenger related removal software to no avail.
The name of the software responsible is spy-whacker, and is spy ware based itself.
I did not install this software, nor did i authorize the installation, so i'm going to guess i'ts illegal.
Should i try and send an e-mail to the offending company, or would that be a waste?

AV software really won't solve your problem, and if they are the PITA they seem to be, emailing them might only encourage them. Try the progs recommended by Oni first.

i had spyware to were i dunt install anything, but they still show up. Last time i reformatted my hd, and disk clean. All i did was install a view programs like aim, Cs, kazaa lite and i still ended up with popups and programs that install them selves onto my computer.

Use Spybot Search and Destroy, ( http://www.safer-networking.org/ if I remember right), and get rid of Internet Exploder.

Use Firebird, or Mozilla (hell, even Opera would be good for you) No Active-X worries, no pop-ups, and a distinct lack of spyware:)

It may take a couple of weeks to learn to like a new browser, but it will make your life a whole lot easier............

i agree to the greatest degree that the other gecko based browsers are alot better than IE. i'm using opera (registered) on my sisters laptop right now, i put it on her computer so she would stop having problems with unsafe activeX controls. she really likes the pretty interface and tabbed browsing. on my main machines, i use mozilla, it's pretty good.

I dunno, I keep seeing so much praise over opera and mozilla that i might switch to them tonight to see what happens.

Thanx to everyone for your help. I was getting tired of the IE look anyhow and needed a new browser.

I wish there was a program that finds spyware, locates the host, and anonimously mail bombed them to death so their server would go down. I'd be first in line at the beta release.........LOL.

EDIT: I just installed Opera 6.0, and it seems fine. I also ran Ad-Aware again, and it found 4 more problems. Come to think of it, my cd-rom hasn't opened since i installed and ran Opera.
Thanx again for your help, people.
