are raptors all they are cracked up to be?

I dont feel comfortable having my hard drive be the bottle neck for my everyday operations. I recently put together a machine for a friend with a regular 7200 rpm 8mb cache drive and I almost went crazy with how slow it was. Maybe I am too anal but for me my raptor was worth every penny. I see it as a performace upgrade like I would ram or cpu. I have 2 portable 120 gig drives for mp3, movies etc. so storage for me isnt an issue.

I have 2x80GB Sata maxtors running in a RAID 0 right now, and I must admit they are zippy.

I had a 36GB Raptor, and I must admit it was zippy.

But, I sold my Raptor for 90 bucks, and I got my two 80s for 70 total, so I made 20 dollars for switching to a higher capacity HDD Solution.

I would go for a nice RAID 0, not terribly expensive, and they are nice and quick.

Maybe (probably) I didn't understand your post. How do you do RAID anthinng with one drive?

Yeah, i'm replacing my raid with 1 Raptor. If thats acceptable i'm gonna keep it that way, if not, here comes 2nd raptor.

i love my 76g raptor and it does not compare to ANY past drive i have had - upto 250g WD 8mb drives.

i think the only performance comaprision is maxtors new 6mb cache drives - but it is also a matter of $$$ - if u can afford t buy it!

i will always buy a fast HD for my system - i dont see harddrives as "just" places to store data - since they are constantly accessed they need to be as fast as possible as well.

"i think the only performance comaprision is maxtors new 6mb cache drives - but it is also a matter of $$$ - if u can afford t buy it!" geez cache is going downhill :) :)

As someone who uses his machine for multimedia editing/encoding and gaming, I can say without a doubt that my Raptor made the single greatest performance improvement on my machine. It was a breathtaking, immediately apparent improvement in overall system performance. Yes, worth every penny. I'd also like to add that there is a big difference between a 36GB Raptor and a 74GB Raptor; the 74GB drive is significantly faster.

Look at the scores

but your still better off getting 2x Sata 7200 rpm drives that are pretty large for raid0 compared to one 74 gb raptor right? those things are pricey

Better off? No, I don't think so. The real world performance increases are negligible at best and halving of the mean time between failure makes it less reliable. I seriously doubt a pair 7200RPM drives will approach a 10000RPM Raptor; but I've never tested the theory.

actualy id have to say that the 2 drives do perform better than the 1 raptor although not in all areas but most

I'm suprised that this wasn't brought up. Decide for yourself if it is worth the money. I personally think they are.

me id pay 120 max for the 74gig and 80 for the 36 so to me its not worth the money when u can get better perpormance on a raid of the same price (in my opion) and yes i know there are some things that it outperforms a raid on but not much
