Ok, I got an Abit AN8-32X mobo, and had a 3700+ running in it fine. I just got an Opteron 165 and plopped it in and it won't post.

There are no error code beeps. The power just flashes on for an instant and then off and keeps repeating that until I shut off the power supply switch. The display shows 1 and then 3 and then F when it goes off. These go by very fast, but I think that is right.

Here's the wierd thing - I had the same thing happen with this board and a 4400 x2. I tried everything. I had the mobo out of the case, I tried that cpu in my old mobo and it didn't work, I tried my old cpu (the 3700+) in this board and it worked, so I decided it must be a bad cpu. Now I have the Opty doing the exact same thing, so I must be doing something wrong. Who can tell me what it is??
Thanks!

yea, I tried that both times. also flashed the bios. This is the first time I have ever seen a board do this. Usually they either power up and gives error beeps, or just don't power up at all. This real quick flashing on and off is wierd. The fans and lights flash on for about a tenth of a second and then off. It keeps doing that every second or so.
Can anybody tell me what the 1,3, and F codes mean?
Thanks!

AMD only lists Asus K8N LR and Tyan Tomcat K8E, K8SH as recommended motherboards for Opti 165. Have you checked with ABIT for compatibility?
Are you using registered memory?
