I've been running my P4 Willamette 2.0 @ 2.24 for a while. I was running AS2 with a Tt P4 Volcano and getting temps like 31 idle 45 load. I recently got a Sunflower and AS3. I lapped the Sunflower then I applied a very thin layer of AS3. My temps are now 30 idle and 39 full load. I'm definatly a AS3 man now.:D

Yea.. it will take like a week to settle in even if they say 48 hours..

Lapping made a huge difference too!

Garfield:

When changing thermal paste, I always recommended to lap it before you change the compound. People who have tried it found it 2-3 degrees worst because the compounds are mixing.

As Yodums says, lap it. You don't have to get very aggressive with the lapping, just lap it slightly with the finest grit paper that you normally use. All you want to do is expose a clean surface for the paste; you already have it flat from your previous lap job.

I just lapped my North Bridge with 600, 1500, then 2000 grit. I applied AS3 and now my board temps are about 3 / 4 degrees cooler.:D

What is lapping?
Please understand this question on behalf of my location and explain it a bit in detail, please.

Your heatsink is grinded by mechanical sanding units which will smooth out your HSF. Although the machine aren't always accurate and it gets uneven, thus when slapping on your heatsink, it'll be uneven, and your thermal compound may or may not take over depending on how much you used, but either way it doesn't get enough contact.

When lapping it, your heatsink becomes very flat making 100% contact, before it, it made only 70-85% contact.

When lapping it, you'll see the sides coming in, and then you'll eventually see everything in one flat layer other than bumps.

This is done through:

Waterproof Sandpaper (200-1500grits [1500 Grit is my opinion others say 600 is enough. The 1500 I prefer because, it takes more sanding grinds off the bottom of your heatsink, and it gives you a mirror finish] using the wet option of the waterproof sandpaper)

Lapping on a flat surface (I use glass)

And lapping the heatsink itself.

The water is meant to not scratche the heatsink while lapping. Another reason why you lap is that, the sanding by manufacture leave heavy scratches after, so you also won't get full contact.

... Anymore questions.. go ahead ... :)

Hmmm...4 degrees is enough to convince me to change. How much would AS3 cost? Is lapping risky (never done it before)?

lapping=plansliping

Ok, I've got most of the points now, but I still wonders about why I need the glass. Okay, it is to get the thing flat, but how do I use it.
