wondering why I have overclock probs with this setup. I spared no change building up this system but can't seem to get it setup like some of the reviews claim. Just upgraded to 1602 bios and had to reset everthing. With previous bios had set to 2344ghz with mem at fast sets (1:1, 3-2-2-5-12). Played games all day at those sets, no probs. Shoudn't I be able to set to 350+ fsb with all else at default w/ this hardware? Not sure what I had my voltages set bfore the bios update, but it was tweaked max for everyday use. Just thought this memory would do more. If anyone else has this setup, pls tell me what you have your timings set, voltages, and fsb set/etc. I don't want to have to spend hours tweaking like I did last time. Looking to max timings with max overclock. Maybe my 520w ps is limiting???

ha! that is the question. I had it tweaked for max mem timings/fsb and didn't save those settings before going to 1602. you can kick me for that :) . I just was never really satisfied with my overclocks. Maybe air-cool is the prob, but even with coretemp for an hour, my temps never went over 67c. that should be good, right? no matter how loose I set my timings, I never was able to go >3.4ghz. My max is 9 multi, maybe that is prob....

I'm not looking to go extreme with overclock, just looking for the sweet-spot. I had a ABIT Fatal1ty AA8XE/prescott 3.0/Patriot bh mem previous to this Asus p5w dh/conroe setup and had the prescott at 3.9GHz with the same air cooler (Tright XP-120 w/ 4'' fan). It ran for over a year heavy gaming w/o a prob, so I'm just wondering why this conroe won't go max with the same cooling setup.

i have the same setup as you... air cooling is not the prob... i was able to do 4ghz with a yate loon on my ultra 120... how much voltage u pumpin through that chip to do thoes speeds.

This is a daily driver, in case with all periphs running.. I never went over 1.6 on cpu. Used the pink/red as indicators ;-). I moved all the voltages to first pink sets, then started moving my timings down until I hit the spot. I can give you guys cpu-z screen shots, have all those. Hit >11,000 on 3dmark06 w/geforce 8800gtx. wanted to do more but was limited due to my overclocking nubs. ah yeah, I'm usin' a TT 4'' blue led on the TR120 w/ set to around 1800rpms. i like quiet speed ;-). Man, I can't come near your oc speeds. I'm using a OCZ 520watt modstream with this 8800GTX. I'm going for a Galaxy 850 next week, maybe will have some effect on my sit.

ya know, I had the questions and all you guys have done is ask me questions. I'm still sitting here rebooting 400 x's trying to dup my overclock. thnks! I'll be a sport and let you know what I set when I get this done, prob next week or so ;-)

sorry if I was a bit testy the other night, was needing my WOW fix :) . I really appreciate you guys' help. i now have some more time to devote to oc'ing this setup and need all the info I can get to reduce the amount of time I spent last time config'ing (sev hours).

My current setup is this and running extremely stable but can't get anything over 350 cpu freq:

configure dram timing by spd (auto timings)
9 (stock) ratio (can reduce to 6)
350 cpu freq
DDR2/700Mhz dram freq
perf mode=std
pci express locked to 100mhz
pci clock synch mode locked to 33.33mhz
mem voltage=2.20v
cpu vcore=1.60v
fsb term voltage=1.40v
mch chipset=1.65v
ich chipset=1.20v

I got it back where I was. Went down to 8 multi from 9. Now at 400 (1600) fsb 1:1 with 1.45vcore/2.20 mem and 4-4-4-5 (9trc) mem timings. 3.2ghz, super stable and super fast. For some strange reason, anything over 400 bus speed will not work stably... hmmm, must be cpu/mb limits.

will mess with it more to find my max limits when I have some more free time...

BTW - nd4spd - I have a B2 step chip, maybe yours is better cpu?

The P5W DH is a 975 chipset board, in general 400 is about it on the FSB. If you want faster you'll most likely have to go after a 965 based board. You also can not compare the C2D chips to your old P4 setup. Nothing is the same, your old P4 rig at 3.9 would be flattened by your current rig at stock clocks so looking for a "sweet spot" is completely subjective and we can not help you there....

or you could increase the multi back to 9 and find your clock between 3.2 and 3.6 start at 355x9 and go up... fsb doesnt mean anything on these setups.

with a 9 multi there is NO reason to drop to 8 lol especially on this board

Some timings; as was stated 400FSB seems to be it, but I have many problems myself trying to max out my memory even at default FSB (266FSB), I've ran the system stable at 425FSB and that was with 533 memory divisor;

It will depend on your Ram to some degree as far as pushing because the dividers are not the greatest. Running 1:1 at a 400 FSB has got to be a decent jump over the stock 266, even if your Ram isnt really running any faster the FSB is hollin azz at that speed. I'd be curious to see if there is really any gain above 400, once you hit 400 I'd think you would be clear of ever saturating the data pipes and it would be more likely that something else would start bottlenecking any further performance gains. It would be great to have a comparison of say 390 x 9 = 3510 on the P5W DH vs 7 x 500 on one of the 965 boards to see if the additional FSB is really paying off.

I have the Gigabyte 965P DS3 mobo which I'll be testing on Tuesday after my Asus P5W DH Overclocking review is done, so I'll remember to try that exact experiment, for ya.

On a side-note look where I got with a Asus M2N32-SLI Dlx board and memory which is running at 750MHz;

Excellent info guys! I've been tweaking for the last week to find my sweet-spot. Everything was running a-ok at 9 multi, 400 (1600) fsb 1:1 with 1.45vcore/2.20 mem and 3-3-3-5 (8trc) mem timings (very tight for that overclock I assume) but for some odd reason my computer would not go into hibernation mode at these settings. Being one that leaves the pc running and walks away for it to sleep in 15 and hib in 30, it annoyed me. For several days I tried moving usb devices around etc to no avail. Finally I just moved down to 375fsb and it started acting right. weird...

I'll post some pics to this thread of my sets, temps this weekend.

I think I'm pushing my limit w/975. Looking to get another Geforce 8800gtx in a few weeks which will require a new MB. 680i models for SLI - looking at asus striker extreme "extremely" closely (no pun intended ;-)) and Abit models. We'll see how those work out...
