Success! Glad you finally got that sorted out. It would still be a good idea to let G. Skill know what you went through and who the seller was (maybe include some serial #s if you can). I can't imagine them being happy about all this.

After trying to call them yesterday and getting the busy signal, I emailed them about buying 3 sets and they all had at least 1-3 defective ram modules.

Here's some pics for you guys on my progress so far. IMG_2516.JPG IMG_2517.JPG IMG_2518.JPG

So before I take my GTX 1080 out of this PC and install the GTX 1050 OC into it instead, I want to make sure im doing things right. Would i have to uninstall the gtx1080 drivers and then install the new drivers for the gtx1050? I want to have this one PC working at all times so i can look up info or anything like that. Or do I just install the 1050 OC gpu and install the driver. I dont want to have both drivers, thats why im asking lol.

Also, ive been waiting a while to get a new monitor. Currently using a ASUS 24" 144hz 1ms 1080p monitor and i can play all games on max settings. I want to get a 27" 1440 144hz 1ms GSYNC monitor, and i finally found one for $500. All the Asus and acer predator 27" 1440 gaming monitors are over $650-$800. The Dell 27" Gsync 1440p 1ms is only $499 right now at BestBuy and i trust Dell, Samsung, Asus, Acer, and BenQ when it comes to monitors. I was wondering if the GTX1080 can handle max settings on a 1440p, because I really dont want to upgrade to the 1080ti unless I have too. Eventually, im sure I will, but ive only had the gtx1080 for less than a year so i want to push it to the max before i upgrade. If the gtx1080 can handle games at max settings on a 1440p monitor than, thats great. Anyone who knows about this, let me know.

So for the new PC, this is what I got so far:

-Install GTX 1080
-Install Windows 10 Pro
- Install all drivers and update Windows
-Overclock

If i missed anything, let me know. Much appreciated to you all.

If you're installing Windows 10 I would install the GPU after the OS. W10 has a habit of thinking it knows best when it comes to drivers. If you can download the correct GPU drivers to a USB drive, install the OS and get it updated, then install the GPU with the rig offline. Then install the drivers. W10 has screwed up enough things with its heavy handed driver nonsense I wouldn't trust it. My $.02

YESSSS! The 4th set works. I put in 2 ram modules in 1&3 and booted up to Asus' Bios. Took them out, put in the other 2, fingers crossed and they worked! So I left the ram in 2&4, and I put the first set back in slot 1&3, and booted up to Bios. XMP is on so it's running at 3200mhz frequency, capacity is 32768mb which is 32gb and voltage was automatically set to 1.360v. I'm so glad I went with a different seller. I don't think the seller did it intentionally but here's something weird. The first 3 sets I received, the ram was in the plastic case with the model and serial number facing up. This set, the ram modules were all facing down and the plastic was a little cracked because it's not supposed to be put in that way so I'm thinking the seller or someone tested them to make sure they worked before they sell it...? I don't even care, I'm glad the ram is finally working.

Now I have to take my asus gtx 1080 out from my old computer then install windows. Install the drivers and definitely do some cable management since I spent 80-90 bucks on those braided cables lol. Also will be adding 3 noctua 3000rpm pwm fans for the push part on my 360mm CPU cooler and then I think I've finally built my first computer by myself :) with the help of you guys and YouTube of course. And a special thanks to wingman. I'm about 60% there since I'm including everything from installing the GPU and then installing all drivers, and finally overclocking the CPU to hopefully 4.9-5ghz. Will def need help with that because MSI's Bios is very different than Asus' Bios. Every company uses different terms. I'm on my ohh me now since I unplugged the cable to plug into my build so it'll post pics soon.

Wow that is one for the books 4 sets to get them working at the rated speed, I'm glad you stuck it out.:) Do you think Amzon sold you the same sets? You can call G.SKILL on Monday.

I always precautionary uninstall the Video card drivers before installing a new card.

Thanks for that advice. I'll Install Windows 10 first and update the windows OS first, THEN I will install the gtx1080 and its drivers.

Yes, it definitely is. I dont beleive they sent me the same set because they gave me my refund into my amazon account within an hour after i dropped off the package at UPS, and as soon as i got the funds in my amazon account, i ordered another set but it was from the same seller. So I actually got the new set a day before they received the old ones that i sent back. Just so you guys know, the seller was "Jaydash Inc" but it was fullfilled by amazon.

Regarding the drivers. I'm posting a pic of the nvidia apps and drivers. There's 6 different ones including an audio driver, so i just want to make sure im hearing you correctly. Do i only delete the 4th nvidia app, the "Nvidia Graphics Driver 378.92" or do I delete all the nvidia apps/drivers and reinstall it with the new gtx 1050 OC? I apologize for the pic being sideways. I dont know why it is lol. Just want to know if i oonly need to delete the one graphic driver or all 6 of the nvidia apps and drivers, then reinstall it with the gtx1050 GPU?

And I will call Gskill later today just to see what they say. I have proof on my amazon account that i had purchased and returned 3 sets, so i'll let you guys know what they say. It's not like i'm trying to get anything for free. I work hard for my money and i expect to get what i order and in 100% brand new working condition, that's it.

Hey Alaric, just to be clear, I should use my current PC with the z170 and 6700k to download the drivers for my Asus strix GTX 1080 and put them on a USB flash drive, then on my new build, install windows 10 and update it, then install the GPU, then insert the flash drive to install the drivers. Did I get the steps correct?

Yup. It seems like a pain, but W10 has developed a nasty reputation for installing whatever drivers it deems proper-and being wrong. It doesn't matter what system you download the drivers on as long as you have them to install with the card while W10 is offline. W10>GPU>drivers

Got it.

-Download all new drivers for 1050 onto flash drive
-delete all 6 apps/drivers
-unplug ethernet cable
-install the gtx1050 GPU
-start up pc with flash drive plugged in and install the drivers that i downloaded

I would unplug the Ethernet cable before you uninstall the 6 drivers otherwise windows will try to update the default drivers with a old version.

The Rig look good in the screenshots.:)

Will do, so just switch step 2 and 3, right?

And thanks, I've been saving for a while to build my first PC without having to buy a custom built PC from companies lioke ibuypower, cyperpc, etc. I wanted a Asus ROG motherboard, a 1000w gold certified PSU especially an EVGA brand one. I definitely wanted the new samsung 960 evo M.2 NVME ssd for faster speeds, I wanted the 32gb of 3200mhz Gskill ram, and everything from the case to the cables, I bought exactly what i wanted. Took about 7-8 months of saviung up but im hoping it will be worth it. My current rig, although it's still a very good and fast computer for gaming or anyuthing else basically. Im sure the new rig will be even faster with the faster ssd, double the ram and faster ram speed, also the processor, im hoping to get to 5ghz, fingers crossed. Those 3 components right there should make a big diffference compard to my PC now as its OS is on a 850 evo, and running on 2 8gb sticks of gskill ripjaws 4 2400mhz ram, and the processor is very similar. From what Intel says, its a 13% performance upgrade. And also, instead of that tiny 120mm corsair h55 cpu cooler, i now have a thermaltake 360mm cpu cooler for better cpu cooling and hopefully higher overclocking results :)

Also the front panel has a wire that lights up the inwin logo in the front of the case which i plugged into 1 of the 2 RGB strip headers on my asus hero ix so the color goes with the motherboard. Ill post a pic up when i get a chance. Its cool. Also the front has 4 usb 3.0 ports but my mobo only has 1 usb 3.0 header so I used a converter that came with the case and plugged it into the ROG extension header which ive read frrom many people that it's fine but it will be running at 2.0 speeds. No biggie. I have 4 3.0 ports in the back anyway lol. More than enough. My MSI SLI Plus z170 only has 2 in the front and 2 in the back which is plenty already. And also the hero ix has the usb 3.1 type a and c, my z170 only has type c. I cant wait til I finish building my first rig and overclocking the CPU. So far, the only problem was the 3 defective sets of ram. Everything else was easy and just like it shows in the youtube videos on building a pc on your own.

PS, bestbuy just raised the price on that Dell 27" 1440p 144hz 1ms monitor with GSYNC; model: S2716dgr back to $699 instead of $499. Kinda upset about that as that was such a good deal but i wanted to finish building my pc before buying anything else. Oh well, ill just wait and hope the price goes down again.

Yes just switch step 2 and 3. The rig should be a good overclocker, you have good cooling and the i7 7700k will need it. The i7 7700k can go up to 90c also maximum 1.44v Vcore. You did a great job on your first build.:)

Thank you. Not finished yet, but I should at least have everything running by this weekend and can start overclocking as well. Ill stress test through the night as that's the worst part when it comes to overclocking in my opinion lol. I want at least 24 hours stable. 48 or 72 would be even better but i think 24 hours would be fine? What do you suggest? When i finish the build, then ill ask you for some more help with the overclocking and turning that function off so it doesnt produce extra heat for the CPU. I dont want to get ahead of myself, I want to get the windows 10 and GTX1080 plus drivers installed first, then once everythings updated and both PCs are running, i will overclock the new rig :)

Couldnt have done it without you bud. Alaric and everyone else as well, I appreciate all the advice/opinions you guys have given me. I will NEVER buy a custom built PC again. That 400-500 bucks extra that im paying a company to build, i could spend on better components or just save so i can have more money in my wallet lol. So far, I am very happy with everything. Will update once i install windows and install gtx1080 and the 1050 on my current rig and ill post pics of both my old rig and new rig, even though my old rig was built in July 2016 when the gtx1080 first came out.

Regards,

Jordan

I stress test for a half hour or hour at first to get my maximum overclock, then when I'm done and happy I test 24 hours, if I have a failure then I up the voltage a little and try again. Building PCs is fun sometimes, I just wish the new parts had lower defective rates, I have had plenty of defective new motherboards, memory, processors and video cards. Wen the build is done including overclocking the best part for me is using my PC all the time I can for gaming, video, tv shows, DVD movies, music, web work and browsing. What I also like in building rigs, is most parts I purchase have a 3 year warranty or better, also saving money is great.

Sounds good. I do something something similar. Once i see that it has no failures, then I just leave it and let it keep stress testing.

And YES, I agree. Building saves a ton of money and you get all the paasrts you choose. I havent tested the gtx1050, but If anything is wrong with it, ill have to contact asus. Or maybe ill just order another from amazon and send back the defective one, since i havent had time to try it ya know? Ill know soon enough. No biggie.

Another question. as yoiu can see from the pics, there really only one exhaust in the back for a 120mm or 140mm fan. But reading up on the case, adding a rear 140mm exhaust fan on this case makes a BIG difference, so I was wondering if i should just get another thermaltake rgb ring fan in 140mm size for the reaer to match everything else or should i get a 140mm noctua 3000rpm pwm fan for the rear exhaust for maximum airflow? I will be getting 3 more 120mm thermaltake rgb ring fans for the front of the case as i can move those "X mount brackets which hold either 2.5" ssd or 120mm fans. If you know what im talking about, its the 3 brackets in the front of the case but its on the backside of the chassis, i can move those 3 brckets to the front part so it would be facing the glass panel once i put it on. I think that would look awesome and it would block out the site of the noctua 120mm fans that im going to put for the push part of the radiator. That front area can hold 3 120mm fans like i mentioned either in the back or front of the chassis and i can also mount 2 140mm fans to the front panel or 3 120mm fans but regardless, once i put the 3 rgb fans in the front, you wont really see the inside of that area anyways. I just want good airflow, and that front area is great for bringing in fresh cool air and then it will go right into the radiator. so ill have 6 fans for the radiator, 3120mm facing the side tinted glass panel and i have corsair 140mm white led airflow fans so i can mount 2 of those to the front. And the back of that front area has vents on the back panel.

I see some custom builds on google with this case. most are custom watercooling. I wish i bought the 360mm extreme EKWB Kit for $400 instead, but im gonna stick with the thermaltake 360mm cooler for now. Anyways, heres a link of builds with my case and how they set up the fans https://www.google.com/search?q=inw...UK7mMKHc9qDw8Q_AUICigD&biw=1920&bih=950&dpr=1

Another option would be to just put 3 thermaltake rgb fans in the front panel facing the noctua 300rpm fans so it goes straight into the radiator. With the fans facing the side panel the airflow may be a little weird since it will push air sideways and the front fans will push towards the radiator so some air wioll escape to the back vents. I know, its kinda confusing when im typing it, if i could show you guys, itd be easier to explain lol. Just want to place one last order for the fans all at once from amazon.

And lastly, the way my cpu cooler is mounted on the cpu, SIDEWAYS. Is that alkright. I dont know if the hoses have to be on the bottom perfectly so that you can read the thermaltake logo horizontally or is it fine how i have it? The CPU temps are at 28-30 celcius right now when i check into bios, so is that good? Or should i reposition the cpu cooler so the hoses are on the bottom right next to each other and you can read the logo horizontally?

Thank you all, i cant thank you guys enough. Very grateful for the support.

As far as the Cooler pump block it is fine any direction. So the cooler is fine the way you have it. With the fans if you have more positive pressure blowing in, it will blow hot air out the cracks and open spaces of the case, so the opposite is true with negative pressure.

Gotcha. I read exhaust is just as important as intake. I will use the back 140 as an exhaust and the back panel in the front where the vents are as an exhaust as well and ill mount 2 140mm or 3 120mm to the front. The froont and bottom of the case have dust filtyers, so wherever theres a dust filter, its rcomended that i put an intake fan there. I got it. Only ordered a noctua 3000rpm exhaust fan for the back and a white led 120mm corsair AF for the front exhaust as i have 2 of them so ill have 3 for that back panel in the fron tof the case. Im not spending 60 bucks for 3 thermaltake rgb fans. LOL. And i just saw the new thermaltake PREMIUM rgb fans and theyre almost 100 bucks for 3 fans. same with corsair, they have a new fan that cost about 100 bucks for 3 and so does nzxt. No thanks, I'm not gonna change the color of the lights and fans every day, im just gonna keep it red and white, to match the Asus ROG them as welll as the red frame inside the case. Those fans are rediculously expensive.

having problems installing windows on my new pc. I had it working but i realized it was using an OEM product key since i signed in with an microsoft account so I had to do a couple resets and the internet woudnt work when i installed windows 10 pro without signing into microsoft account. Can someone please help?

I finally got it to install I think but the internet doesnt work. I have the usb thumb drive in there still. I dont know what apps and drivers i need from there, etc. I finally restarted it without problems, but still couldnt get the internet to work with the ethernet cable plugged in so i just shut it down. I also updated the BIOS one at a time, til i got to the latest version, 0906.
