is there a table which tells me which Athlon CPU model is equivalent to an Intel P4? i.e.: Athlon 1700+ = P4 2.53 Ghz.

Having hard time making client understand concept. TIA

I'm pretty sure it is "supposed" to be like

1700+ amd = 1.7ghz p4
2000+ amd = 2.0ghz p4
2500+ amd = 2.5ghz p5

etc

Name , clock speed , bus speed

xp model 2800+ , 2.25ghz, 333 mhz,

xp model 2700+, 2.17ghz , 333 mhz,

xp model 2600+ , 2.13ghz, 266 mhz,

xp model 2400+ , 2.00ghz, 266 mhz,

xp model 2200+, 1.80ghz , 266 mhz,

xp model 2100+, 1.73ghz , 266 mhz,

xp model 2000+, 1.67ghz, 266 mhz,

xp model 1900+, 1.60ghz, 266 mhz,

xp model 1800+, 1.53ghz, 266 mhz,

xp model 1700+, 1.47ghz, 266 mhz,

I hope this helps

yes.
but what about the barton core???
does it mean barton 2500+ = 2.53Gh P4??????

Ah, that life was so simple. I'm just waiting around to see what comes of this. If someone has it mapped out lets send him or her to the mideast to straighten all that up too.:)

As said above, basically, Yea. but its not that a Barton will say encode a DivX in the same time as the P4 (P4 will be faster) or it will make computations same as P4 (AMD will be faster).
Basically what AMD did is like take *some* benchmarks and make an average, and compare to a P4, so a 2500+ will perform pretty close (in some apps) or better (in others)

The way I 'xplain to lucy is as follows:

You got two piles of rocks and two guys whose task is to move the rocks to the other side of the yard.

One guy (Mr. P4) grabs one rock at time and runs over to the new pile as fast as he can, over and over.

The other guy (Mr. Athlon) grabs all the rocks and huff's and puff's all the way to the other side side of the yard but he is finnished after one or two trips.

RESULT: Both complete the same task about the same time. It comes down to a matter of style.

So now Lucy is clear on the concept, I think :0

That is a good expination...I think the pr ratings were originally supposed to go 1700=1.7P4 but they got a little off with that, and now it is all up in the air.

Actualy thinking back to the Athlon XP "PR" rating hoopla I believe the ratings were said to indicate Athlon Thunderbird equivalent performance if the Tbird would have kept scaling upwards and had nothing what so ever to do with the P4 according to AMD

"ah hem" yeah ok anyway, I think most folks are thinking of the P4 regardless of AMD wishes....

when PR was establish for AMD XP. I totally agree. Now , AMD try to confused people more with the barton core.
barton 2500+ is 1.8Ghz and is faster than XP2400+ which is 2Ghz. Now they compare XP with P4 , then barton with XP and P4. It all mess up, I am confused too.

So for instance, what does a utility like Sandra say u are running at? can we go that-away, say for instance if we poll some XP 2200 users and get a ballpark figure of 1800 ghz? will that give me an idea of which Athlon CPU is equivalent to a P4 2.53 ghz?

the barton 2500+ is the amd equivalant to a intel 2.53. the 2400+ and the 2600+ would also be close in terms of performance in most tasks. the fact of the matter is that in some apps, the p4 will do better than an equivalent athlon and in others the athlon will win
