ATI apparently has some ****ty support for Linux, does anyone know if this is going to change soon? I am planning on running games with my Linux box. Should I just switch to Nvidia?

Ati has only released 3D drivers for their 8500-series cards, and there are open source drivers for cards older than that. If you have one of those badass 9700s, then you are out of luck. Should have bought a Nvidia.

I have my 8500DV AIW running under Mandrake, but can't play UT2k3. Haven't tried any other games yet.

Should work fine. Ati has drivers for it on their website somewhere. Won't be as fast as in Windows, though, I don't think.

yes, apparently they are not doing too well at the moment and are migrating to linux, so they are donating money to ati to make better drivers before they start using them.

So the Weather Channel is investing money they're losing anyway to cut out M$ and turn a long term profit on the savings? I wish them success.

I quit watching them because, like CNN, they loop every 15 -30 minutes and I've got better things to do like lurking around here LOL.

I think its more along the lines of them moving from higher end, more expensive proprietary Unix boxes to Linux machines on Intel architecture cpus, decided to go with Ati Radeons in the workstations, and also decided they need some drivers and bought the pitch to do the work from Tungsten Graphics.

yeah those unix boxes can kill you on the up front price. I used Valor software to build circuit boards. Valor cost us 60k per seat to use on top of what HP charged us for the system service contract. Add in unix cost per seat, etc. Any wonder why Tyco closed our plant and opened our replacment in China. I wonder if they are using licensed software or Chinese pirated copies?

If someone has a box with a Radeon 9700, or even a Radeon 8500, i'd be interested to see performance comparisons between Windows and Linux.

ill try it out tonite or this weekend- i left my RH8 cd at school and had to reformat 2 days ago :p

alright..these drivers are beautiful at least for the linux games, both tuxracer and chromium have no problems, and are high fps....this is the first time (including with my Geforce2 Pro and Nvidia's supposedly superior drivers) that i have been able to play any game in linux...i will try wine tomorrow :)
