ATI now? Or wait until Nvidia GT300's?

OK so it's xmas coming up and I'm thinking about getting a new GPU (every Xmas I always take 150 out of my bank and buy something, I often end up not spending it)

After looking at the current GPU's the 4770 looks in my price range and has DX10. After looking at the benchies though I found that the performance of it was terrible compared to my current GTX 260 (625/1100)

So going up from there the 4850 with 1GB of VRam sounds pretty good but pricey. DX11 and performance is slightly higher than the 260 but the price (about 250)

So if I were to go to go for an ATI card it would be the 4850 but is it worth it? Do you think the GT300 series will give you a massive performance increase? For 200 quid will I be able to buy a 300 card that beats the 4850? or my 260?

Note if you're a fanboy please say at the top or bottom of your post. I don't classify myself as a fanboy since I happily consider both options before getting a GPU, but I am a fanboy for intel over AMD.

A 4850 would be no competition for a 260 and does not have DX11; I think you mean the 5850.

If you're okay with what you're running right now, I'd honestly wait it out and see how nVidia's new cards perform and how prices are at that time. Whether or not you see a difference in performance moving from card to card would really depend on the games you play and at what resolution.

A 5770 isn't a bad performer, it's on par with a GTX260. If you overclocked it then you would see performance that matches the GTX 275, so you may want to consider that. A 5850 easily beats a GTX285, but is rather pricey due to production shortages and I would wait until January sometime until prices become more reasonable.

As for the GT300? Theories abound on the series at the moment, is there even a solid release date? If you have no real need for a new card right now, then wait. Either prices will be lower for cards already out, or newer cards will released.

Wait for things to settle down after the Christmas season. By then we should be close to the GT300 series release, ATI stuff may be more available, prices should settle out, etc.

What is your current GPU?

Knowing Nvidia the GT300 series won't be out until 2012, and since we're all going to die then anyway.

Also the 4770 is equal to a 250 not a 260. A 260 heavily outperforms a 4770. Crysis on max runs at 4.9fps on the 4770 and 23.6fps on the 260.

We're talking about the 5770 here, and no way does it perform that badly in Crysis, not to mention you're pulling numbers out of your backside. Have a look here instead - LINK

Your current gpu/desired resolution and eye candy is must have information for some of us to give you good advice. Unless you're rocking some old old stuff, even nvidia 8800's are still more than enough for almost all games out right now. I actually "downgraded" from an 8800 Ultra to a 4650 Mobility and I'm still quite content.

I would say wait until the 300 series comes out to see if the 5800/5700's go down in price a little bit if you're considering ati. The prices on some of the new cards have gone up in price since the launch. If you're thinking of going green tho, I believe you can get a gtx 260 for very reasonable now ($180).

you wont get anything sufficiently better then your current gtx260 for a reasonable enough price to justify buying.

stick with your current card
