I am new to the world of o/c with AMD chips so I thought I'd ask the experts.

Just brought a T-bird 1700+ with stepping codes of

AXDA1700DUT3C, 9785077280422, JIUHB0309UPMW

Hope I did my research right. :D

I have a MSI K7N2 Delta - L mobo.

Geil pc3200 2x512MB

Looking to get MSI nvidia FX5200 video with 128MB DDR

What would be a good CPU fan? Power supply?

Please help me with this.

 .....stay...away...from that card!!!!!! The 5200FX is the worst modern video card to date!

I *owned* one. I cant stress this enough.

If you are looking at a video card you have several viable options.

An older Gforce4 Ti___ (dunno but cheap)
A Radeon 9600XT ($120-150)
Radeon 9800 PRO ($220)

Nvidia has their head far up their *** these days. I would stay away from all of their grafix cards. If you are looking for something with longevity, I strongly suggest you get a 9800.

also...
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS
...and the sickness:eek:

Heatsink: any all copper Thermalright (not Thermaltake)

Fan: Thermaltake Smart Fan 2 (Its noise levels are adjustable)

PSU: Any Fortron/Sparkle (Yes, even the low wattage ones are better than no namers who claim to be rated at twice the wattage)

Stay away from FX 5200, even the GeForce3 beats it (...and much cheaper Ti4200 destroys it).

Welcome to the forums.

First thats a T-Bred, not a T-Bird. There is a big difference.

Now onto the answers, I perfer the enermax 431w PSU, but probally no one else is going to suggest that. The Sparkles are nice as well as the fortons. How much were you looking to spend?

Your setup looks good.

I leave the air cooling to some one else. Im not really into that anymore.

If you give an idea what you want to spend on each item it will be easier for people to recommend things to you also.

Because word is Enermax is overrated.

All Antecs (Channel Well) are good (Antec True Power is better), Fortron (Sparkle), Sirtec (Enlight, Vantec, Thermaltake), or more expensive Herolchi (Heroichi), PC Power and Cooling, or not as good but not dangerous HEC, TTGI, Zalman (Aopen).

Overrated? go check out some reviews for their noisetaker powersupply line series. Oh yah, I am by FAR no ati fan...haha but go for the 9600XT cause don't you get like a free voucher for Half-life2?

I would not say they are overrated at all.

By the way, I think the Antec TP is the worst PSU that I have ever used.

I base the opinion that Enermax is overrated solely on many threads I read in the past few years at overclockers forums that say so and provide examples to back that up.

Edited on account of agreeing with {PMS}fishy.

Update

I've now not only have a 1700+ but just bought a 2500+ AQXEA.

The past owner only ran it to benchmark it. Here are his results...

Overclocks on this CPU:

3400+/2.3GHZ with 400FSB is tested to be 100% PRIME95 stable for 200hours with an SLK-800 and a 80mm fan spinning @ 2100RPMs on 1.75vcore!

3200+/2.2GHZ with 400FSB is tested to be 100% stable with stock cooling and stock vore, 1.65v!

1.833GHZ/Stock speed is 1.833GHZ, this speed will run super cool, the cpu has been tested to be 100% stable with a vcore of 1.4v at this speed.

2700+/2.0GHZ been tested to be 100% stable with a vcore of 1.45-1.6v.

3000+/2.1GHZ with 400FSB is tested to be 100% stable with stock cooling and stock vcore, 1.65v.

3000+/2.167GHZ with 333FSB which is 3000+ speeds, same as above, but lower FSB is tested to be 100% stable with stock cooling and stock vcore 1.65.

2.5GHZ with 400FSB has been tested and proved to be 100% stable with a vcore of 2.0v. However, this speed was tested with a SP-97 and a 92MM Tornado fan at full speed. It was 100% prime95 stable for 3 days, but I am not guarranteeing this speed because it may not work in all enviroments on air. You will probably be able to run this speed, plus some if you have the right kind of heat dissappater and case cooling. I recommend this cooler if you are looking for this ultra high oc!

I might be new to the overclocking scene, but I've done a lot of study on 3d cards.

Cards such as the Nvidia 5200FX and Ati Radeon 9200 are NOT for any sort of power-use! None at all. Don't go near.

I got a 9600XT, and all I can say is I am absolutely delighted. From my point of view the 9600 is in sort, top-of-the-line when it comes to consumers (Nvidias 5700 corellates approximately).

The 9800XT (and Nvidia 5900-models), although extremely fast, is mostly just a "show of power". Nvidia and ATI both fight over publicity having hte fastest 3d card, but when it comes down to the consumer, these cards are overpriced and go beyond practical use. Whenever one of these cards is truly required by a game, the new generation of gfx cards will most probably offer a cheaper and more powerful option. Also, the not-too-shabby 9800 PRO is already quite cheap, and well worth it.

Just don't go below 5700 or 9600. Their cheap compinents create a bottleneck which causes them to be slower than old cards.

Both are ripoffs. The r9800 is THE top of the line card for only 200 bux. r9600xt is only 30 dollars less. Definitely not worth it. Just get a r9800.

2.3ghz w/1.75v is about average for a 2500+, mine does that fine. It seems its not a locked chip though, and as long as you didnt pay more than a retailer would charge its a good chip.
