Avast's most recent virus definitions update causes it to detect quite a few programs as a virus, Win32:Delf-MZG [Trj] specifically...

Some programs detected are...

  • Spybot Search and Destroy
  • Skype
  • Teamspeak
  • Netmeter (kinda old program)
They are not viruses, just a major amount of false detections. If you get a detection, you can put it in the Virus Chest, Delete it, or take "No Action" which denies you permission to access the file until you restart your computer...

Needless to say, don't delete things. Just put it in the virus chest, then go in there and report a false detection, then restore the file... and turn off Avast... meaning Terminate the Standard Shield and persist changes, at least until the false positives go away. You can also click on the Avast icon and choose "Stop On-Access Protection" for now.

grrr...

There is an Avast forum... which is pretty much down due to load I assume. Lots of folks complaining.

Also, somebody I knew got quite a few detections and happily started deleting files... yeah, that messed up a few things. Oh well.

An update, Avast got another definition update and with the new update, the files are no longer having false positives. Yay!

My understanding is that it was all Delphi code that gave false positives. I can't imagine how that conversation went.

"Hey, people write malware code in Delphi, right?"

"Sure, why not?"

"Great! Let's go for lunch."

I just got a false positive trying to run dvdfab, tried checking Avast for an update, and got the update. I haven't rebooted since then, but I'm hoping that the issue is solved.

I had this happen to me last night it was so irritating I had to reinstall spybot because I accidently moved it to the chest and apparently I couldn't move it back.

Adobe gave out a false positive on the 2nd for Win32/Sality.AM virus on one of the (un)installer files. had us going nuts for a few hours before we found the release of the false positive report. :(
