Some, in aquariums, are still running 20 years on.
They are a very simple and robust design. As long as you're not feeding abrasive materials through it, it will last for longer than your pet dog.

If you look at the internal workings of this pump there is very little to go wrong. Water is the lubricate as the impeller spins on a ceramic shaft. The bottom line, the electromagnet would have to fail and very slim chance of that would happen. Electromagnets are used in many households to commercial applications and work without you or I giving much thought of their existence. Contactors, relays are the most common use of electromagnets.
