girlfrind wants a basic computer, has to run the sims, windows (98 or xp, depending on price), kazaa, and other general programs. i assume built in graphics would work, she uses this one for now and it works but is too sluggish (64megs ram assures this!)

about a $400 limit, including monitor., 17".

what do you giys think?

You starting from absolute scratch? Like case, keyboard, mouse and everything?

Would have to be an AMD system.

I'd say a mobo with sound and video intergrated.

Some of the nForce 2's have built in Geforce 4 MXs which will be fine for The Sims. (And prolly Sims2)

Biostar Mobo - 65 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-138-234&catalog=22&depa=1
Athlon XP 2000+ - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...e=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=4159,3900
Maxtor 80 gig drive - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-132&catalog=14&depa=1
Lite On burner - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...7-106-197&catalog=5&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1 (gotta have a burner)

Ordering a monitor off newegg won't be a good idea. Shipping would be pretty expensive...

Total cost - No idea.

That's up to $274 already without keyboard and mouse, floppy if you need it, leaves about $100 for a 17'' monitor. It's going to be tight. But that's about as cheap as reasonably good stuff gets.

*edit* Oh yeah, forgot about RAM... :(

It's going to be impossible unless you don't have a problem with buying refurbished stuff from Newegg. You're gonna get everything a lot cheaper and also save the shipping money.

It would help if we knew what she already has to cut corners and save a few $$$ here and there.

$400 would barely make a new computer w/o the monitor. NewEgg.com has some 17" monitors for about $115 - $140 shipped. I would go with this one for $134 shipped. You really don't want to skimp on a good monitor as cheap ones will give you (or your g/f) headaches after a few mins. Also, good monitors will last much longer than the computer. I've been using the same 19" monitor for about 7 yrs now and I'm just starting to think about upgrading it.

thanks. actually, she has squat to start with. no cutting corners. it doesnt have to be powerful at all, 1ghz would do it, but i'll say 1.4 minimum (or 1400) However, at that price, for another $30 you can get a 2400, or a 2.4. so i'm thinking an athlon 2400..anyways, now that i have some time:

how would pc2700 go over? 512 megs is pretty cheap right now, i could pick up a single stick of 512mb generic pc2700, a cheap motherboard/processor around 2400 speeds, get onboard everything...

she wants a wireless keybaord/mouse, but they can be piccked up at staples for $30 after rebates quite often. (as a set)

basically i'm thinking:
2400 mobo/cpu bundle
1X512 generic pc2700
Generic (cheap) ATX case w/300W psu
CDRW /OR/ DVDr +CDRW /OR/ 1XdvdR + 1Xcdrw (all lite on)

i was hoping to stay away from the micro cases, i love a good tower, but if its cheap and it will work...well, just never thought of it myself.
ZIM- would that mobo fit in that case? i like the stuff you've found.
(except you linked to a black cdrw for a white case :p )

i'll check back in when i get a better list of things and a better price...that monitor is gonnabe a killer, she is willing to go down to 15", thoiugh...IF NEED BE. (i'll try a local shop so see if i can save from shipping)

EDIT

shes decided on a case (i figured i'd giver her a shot, she's the one who has to look at it!)

big link

it has a generic 300W, that should power the mobo/processor/harddrive/burner, and a few fans, right?
sure i'd like to throw in a 400W antec, but this is not a power pc, its a casual use "
sit all day running not doing anything" computer.

i think the case will do, howbout you?

This is basically the system that I just built for my Niece for Christmas and it works great. The Mobo is easy setup and seems pretty solid. The board even comes with a utility to overclock from within windows that also allows you to adjust voltage and stuff too lol. Anyhow, you could make little adjustments here and there to different parts and maybe find better local deals on say like a HDD or whatever, but that of course is up to you. Also leaves you about $75 for a monitor, which can pretty easily be found in the 17" variety nowadays at like Staples and stuff. Would bring you right in at about your budget. Good luck!

and if you have a Fry's electronics near you keep your eyes open there. They are every now and then running a mobo/cpu combo deal with a decent little ECS board and Applebred 1.6 Duron for $50 out the door. Would be a nice way to save some cash there.

thanks so much guys! this is sweet. i'll get right on it. (maybe this wont be so hard afterall! )

check out fatwallet.com-hot deals forums.

there I check around I got a 120 gb hd for 45 dollars.

and they always have good monitor deals.

What about taking a look on various On Sale forums around the net?

You should take a look at ECS motherboards as well. :)

If you live close to Fry's I would take a look over there since they often have combo sales. :)
