Hello Everyone,

I have a pretty easy and straight forward questions on motherboard mounting.

I am normally part of F@H however while I was moving things well at home :) they had to go dark for a few months. I am ready to start them up however I am honestly tired of having them just sit on boxes.

I looked at a couple benches here, some expensive, some very cheap (intended) but didn't find anything which fits my needs.

I am wondering if I run the risk of shorting the board out by just using some screws/washers/nuts to elevate the board off some MDF? I have an idea in mind which is basically drilling out some MDF and counter sink the one side to allow the board to sit flat then mount using nut/washer combination for the elevation.

Does anyone have a cheap/secure method for PCI cards as well?

If anyone has a suggestion I am always open to idea's as well.

The overall goal is to make the bench cheap and module so I can slide folders off my workbench as needed (repairs mainly).

Thanks,

Yup David that is kind of where I got the idea, mine with just be a little different. Instead of mounting the entire MDF vertical mine will sit on a horizontal.

I did check out the other options you posted Sleepy however honestly a couple are expensive, nice looking but expensive. I currently have folders sitting on the MB boxes which works but would like something a little more sturdy.

I will be honest Sleepy, I am very bad when it comes to shorting out motherboards. I can't tell you how many have died on me for one reason or another which is why I am doing my research now just to make sure.

What I'd do instead of using a router and making things all difficult:
I'd buy a bag of motherboard stand-offs, drill matching 7/64" or 1/8" holes and thread them in place with a bit of glue using a nut driver to get them straight. The stand-offs will make their own threads in wood. Use epoxy if you wish to coat the threads after a pre-install.

For the card bracket, I'd use a pair of 4" L brackets from the hardware store.
Mount a motherboard and card to gauge the height correctly.
Using a pair of vise-grips, align the L's together into a "[" shape and clamp. Drill two holes and rivet/bolt them together. Then screw the bottom-most leg to the MDF under the cards. Then mark screw holes to match the card positions, remove, drill/tap the holes and remount. You can even tape the card bracket tabs to hold them without the bother of drilling and tapping.

Ghetto-licious pie.

**I can draw it for ya if you can't envision this from my wondrous wordsmithery. :)

Diggrr, I like that idea... I'd personally glue some Tee Nuts into whatever material you're using as a tray. I don't know why I didn't remember these things the other day.

I'm so glad McMaster has descriptions of all those neat fasteners now.

Wonderful idea Diggrr and thank you MattNo5ss!

I have a good mental picture of what your talking about Diggrr, the biggest issues will be getting those standoff's straight and even then it shouldn't be to hard.

The L bracket portion should also be easy. Just picking the right material will depend on cost, again doesn't need to be a benching station just secure.

Thanks again everyone, off to Home Depot I go.
