I am about to build a pc for college and I know I want to get an AMD T-bird, but not sure what speed or anything else, I'm just starting out building computers any advice?

Michael...maybe a better way to go about it would be to look at what you want to do w/ your PC. How many hard drives, CD burner?, DVD? Get an idea of how many PCI slots you need...How many IDE (hard drive, cd, etc) drives you will need to support. Do you have a budget figure your trying to stay under for the mobo?

Abit and Asus are two great brands for AMD chips. I don't own ethier one but I have an Abit board on the way. Soyo is a less mentioned, but affordable and stable platform for AMD as well. Search through the posts, check reviews on the net....good luck!

I don't know what your budget is but you could do this

kk266@[email protected]
2x256 PC133 cas2@2x60 or [email protected]/webpromo
Geforce 3@300@ anywhere it is in stock
or
V5 5500 @ 50 @see they cyberdeals section of the forums
1.333AXIA typeC @1 59@ bzboys.com
WBK38-1 @21.95@ coolerchips.com it is loud
and a 19 viewsonic @ 350 @ get atleast a g series monitor P if you have the money! 1065.95 so you still have money for a modem or NIC and mouse and Keyboard.

Advice is respective to what you want the computer to do.. and your budget
As for now all that people can recommend are bits they like, which may not suit your requirements at all

Well, I am going to have a DVD, CD Burner, One Hard Drive (60 Gb?). I am not sure on a budget but probably at or below $1500.
Also, I will put a NIC, Sound Card (Sound Blaster Live), Video Card (Should I buy a GeForce 3 or just go with a 2?), probably no modem. Is that going to help or is there anything else, you need to know.

If you want my opinion... a GeForce 3 is unnecessary at this point, esp. for a college student. A GeForce 2 Pro or Ultra in the 64 MB flavor should do you fine. If you're wanting a good solid KT133A mobo, I'd say you can't go wrong with an Abit KT7A, Iwill KK266, or a MSI K7T Turbo. If you want to go DDR, go for the Epox 8K7A or the MSI K7Master, or wait for nForce or SIS 735 boards.

Do u wan to oc your system? I recommended IWill KK266, it rocks solid @ 160FSB. I have one, no problem whatsoever.

SickBoy has given you great advice, expecially concerning the Geforce 3 and listed some great mobo's.. I personally like the Abit KT7A-Raid as it recieved great reviews and is widely used and respected on this forum.. a great motherboard

On the motherboard side, I'd go w/ an Asus A7V133. its very stable, and fast. For videocard, probably something like a Radeon LE. They have exellent performance at a low cost. Soundcard I'd go SB Live Value II, if all you're going to be doing w/ sound is listening to MP3's and CD's and gaming and stuff. I'd also get about 256 mb of nice PC133 RAM from Crucial or Infineon (both a division of Micron). For processor, I'd go about 1000 or 1200 Mhz AXIA stepping if at all possible. Thats all you'll really need. And if you ever need more, you can always overclock it a bit. For HD, you won't need 60 Gb unless you're doing graphic design or something that requires huge amounts of space. Pick up a nice Fujitsu 20 or 30 Gb, and it'll do you proud.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much to everyone who gave me advice, before I came here I didn't know where to start, you've helped me out tremendously, thanks again.
