I'm picking up a PCIe setup very soon, and I want a card that can play games well @ 1680x1050. I don't really care who makes the GPU, as long as it runs smooth.

I play HL2 - Deathmatch, Pacific Assault, Doom3, Riddick, but would like to play newer games like FEAR, COH, and whatever else y'all suggest.

The only guideline is that it cost lest than $150, and that it fits in my mATX case [see sig].

8800's

oh $150? at that res... you'll struggle

least expensive card that will do that res justice in new games is like a 7900gs thatwas like $165 after rebate I think and even that will take a beating at that res in fear and newer games with decent settings.

you can get an x1900gt for about $175 shipped on the egg. That would probably work pretty well. Otherwise you can get an x1800gto for less than $150 and it should do pretty well at those resolutions as well.

I have a 7900GT at near-reference clocks and it does *okay* at 1680x1050. I play such games as COD2, FEAR, HL2, and BIA-EiB. I definitely can't turn up the AA much past 2x, and in most cases I am forced to use medium texture quality to get decent framerates. The unfortunate truth is that you NEED a high-end card to play 1680x1050 with all the eye candy maxed out.

Some good examples of high-end cards please? Within limits of course......

i use an x1900xtx :) i get 720/800 out of my card easy, any game at 1680x1050 with all settings maxxed, only game that is choppy on it is gothic3, well thats not really my carss problem haha it was coded shiatty haha.

I think the 7900GS would be an excellent performer for that price. Don't expect to be able to crank everything all the way up though.

hi res cards would be the two new nvidia 8800gtx or 8800gts cards. however these are way out of your price range, and as they are quite long they may not fit in your rig

I got a 7900gs two weeks ago for 143$ from bestbuy. Shop around, I'm sure you could get one in your price range. Even easier if you dont mind rebates.

I'm thinking of getting a 6200 PCIe that comes in a bundle. I'm so sure it has to be better than my AGP FX5900XT. I'm getting like 30+ FPS in HL2 Deathmatch w/ the FX. I may wait for a while for the X1950, or the 8800 to drop in price.

The 6200 is FAR inferior to the 5900XT. Right now I would get a 7900gs, its a nice balance of speed, efficiency, and price.

Some benchies:

Thanks for that. I was thinking that it would be a decent deal. I guess I got a great deal on my FX, Picked it up for for $30 new in box.

What's equal to a 7900gs on the ATI side?

I went ahead and got a MOBO w/ onboard DVI today. The chipset is ATI, so should I go ATI? The only reason I mention it, is because of SurroundView.

I'm going Dual-Core after all. Does that have any impact on selecting a VGA card?

So far I'm eyeing a x1900, x1950, or 7900GS [on sale $149].

onboard DVI (GFX?) and a non FX dual core could limit your OC. How much HTT? The single core FX might be a better perfromer for a less then stellar HTT motherboard.

Anyway.. single GFX card it really doesnt matter what brand GPU. Even multi GPU if your not running them SLI or CF it shouldn't matter (for multiple monitors)

The MOBO that I just bought is a DFI RS482 INFINITY. If that matters...
