woul i get much performance increase if i upgraded from 512 ddr to 1024 on far cry or any game for that matter?

For Far Cry, definelty and for most modern games really. Load times will decrease and gameplay might be a tad faster. Remeber 1024 MB is not the "standard" yet but games are coming to the point where we will need that much and more.

Yes another 512mb will help alot like was mentioned above it helps alot for loading times. Not just for video games but other things in windows. Farcry and a bunch of games even Bf1942 use's alot of memory.

I'm going to beat a dead horse here and would definetely recommend upgrading to 1 gig. While you probably won't gain much, if any fps i would still recommend it. For me, my loading times were cut in about half and there was no more annoying jitters the first time i'd reload my gun, use binoculars, open doors, etc. Without all those jitters it made my gaming experience much more fun. If you have the cash, I would definetely grab another 512.

I tried playing UT2k4 with 512mb one time........and I went crazy. You really have no idea how fast a gig of ram is until you lose it. Deff get another 512, its a HUGE jump

I went from 1GB to 512MB, and there's a huge difference. After a few months of using 512MB in games, I went back to a gig because it's so much faster.

I was in the same situation as you and when I upgraded to a gig my overall gaming experience was much more enjoyable in far cry.

since no one seems to have asked... what video card are you currently trying to use? if its an older one, you may get a bigger performance boost by upgrading that first - especially since RAM prices are at an all-time high lately... just a thought!

Good point!
I imagine if he has bought FarCry he must know how good it is, therefore he wouldn't have bought it unless he hasn't got a decent card.

I got my 9800Pro because of FarCry.
I also have PC4000 Hynix 1Gb on the way, might even get 1.5Gb.

Try going from 512 to 256. I had to rma one of my sticks and tried playing with 256. I have a 9800 and had to put everything on low and was still getting major frame lag.

1 gig makes all the diff in the world...i know...i upgraded to 1 gig when I started playing SWG back in the day(when it was fun to be a master creature handler) and I could see a huge difference...I built this desktop with 512mb starting out and didn't really like it..went to 1gb and far cry was so much better :) I will never go back

The thing is, a new video card may give a boost in Far Cry but most games won't if you are running something like a 9800 pro. I would argue that RAM would help you more in all games and apps more by making load times less and gameplay smoother;however, going from say a GeForce MX series will give you an enormous boost. I suppose it really is dependant upon the current video card.

i'm not sure i totally understand your reasoning. but here's how i look at it. if your current card is anything LESS than, say a 9500 - upgrade the video card before you upgrade the RAM.

it also depends on your settings. if you play with much/any AA or AF, or higher resolutions, the video card is going to be MUCH more dependant than the Gig of memory.

what card do you currently have?
