I just bought a socket a 1.2GHZ t-bird, and it is running at 80C under load "I know that that is terrible"so I need help picking out the best, I already have some picked out, I just can't decide, also I need to pick a kick *** thermal paste, I was thinking Arctic Silver, but I am open for suggestions

Pleeessseee Help!!!

Price dosn't matter, it just has to be air cooled. : )

80C is pretty damn hot
they put some kind of thermal compound on it, I don't know what the hell it is, but I don't even know if the company screwed me and Oclocked it

DON'T BY A CYBERPOWER INC. COMPUTER
I have had nothing but problems, problems I can't fix

And I work on a MINIMUM of 5 Computers a day, I knew I should have made my own, whats this damn concience for anyway

If price does not matter, I recommend the Swiftech MC-462A. There are several reviews around. It kicks booty.

From what I've heard, they may be backordered right now. Mine is 2 weeks old and I enjoy experimenting with different HSFs that catch my eye. I'm about due to move along to the next one, so if you want, you can have mine for what they go for and I'll kick for the shipping.

The Swiftech 462A is indeed the best HSF there is. It comes with a Delta 80mm 68cfm fan. The fan is what is actually back-ordered. I ordered mine and a month later I still didn't have it. So I called and they told me that the Delta's were on back-order. They offered to send just the fan and then send the Delta later. If you want the Swiftech make sure you either order it "bare" or ask them to ship the HS first and the fan later when they get in. I also recomend that you get the rehostat so that you can adjust the rpm's of the Delta, they are pretty loud. I purchased a ADDA 80mm 50cfm from Pham computers as a temp fan until my Delta arrives.
You can get the ADDA fans here:
and the Swiftech 462A here:
Good luck

Like the others have said. The "best" is the Swiftech 462A.

Personally, I'd venture to say that with temps as high as you're getting something is wrong with the mounting, paste, or thermistor.

First thing I'd do is take off that heatsink and lap it (use fine grit sandpaper) til it is smooth as glass. Then put some thermal paste. (Arctic Silver is nice, but some Radio Shack thermal paste works fine.) You just want enough to make contact with the entire core. Optimally, a proper application of thermal paste should be almost transluscent.

Carefully, remount the heatsink and plug in the fan to the proper header on the motherboard. If you're still getting temps in the 80's I'd carefully feel the side of the heatsink. At 80 degrees celsius the heasink should be extremely hot. If it is just warm to the touch there's a problem with the temps your motherboard is reporting.

If indeed the heatsink is burning hot; I'd recommend something like an Alpha PAL 6035, PEP 66T, or Globalwin FOP-32. (Don't get that Delta 38 fan) It is an unnecessarily annoying fan. A lot of people love it. I guess the buzzing sound gives them the impression the premium they paid for it is worth it.

Once again. Lap the heatsink and apply thermal paste. If you're still getting high temps, there's something wrong with your setup. As even under piss poor conditions any one of the aforementioned heatsinks should keep a 1.2 GHz Tbird under 50 degrees celsius.
