Better drivers for AMD? (over 400k on r9 290)

A long time member of another team reported over 400k points on a r9 290. He claims new drivers have helped:

Second hand models of r9 290/390 can be found for around $250. R9 390x are about $300 used.
This looks to be a big improvement for team red, although a GTX 970 is probably the way to go at that price range due to power consumption.

Still, it might be worth holding off until Polaris 10 for those that are keeping an eye on the GTX 1070 for forlding.

I was planning on an AMD folding rig since I have some AMD cards here ready to fold. Perhaps some 290's are in my future if it's really true...
