As i was testing stability with super pi like 10 min ago, my computer shut off abruptly. I thought to myself "dang, i guess my cpu isnt stable enough to run at 4.3 ghz." i tried to turn the computer back on, with absolutely no luck. The computer would turn on for a second and then imeeditely (like 0.0001th of a second after) turn off. I tried the connector test, and connected the green wire on the atx connector to the black wire above it. Same thing, the fans began to spin and then turned off before they even accelerated.

I'm gunna try to borrow the power supply from this comp to make sure but after that, i guess i'm gunna have to buy a new one. So, any opinions on whcih power supply to buy for general use. Preferably over 500w, cause the old one was 410w, and that obviously wasn't enough. Also, modular would be cool. My budjet is about 100$ MAX

Dam that's one heck of a psu for the $$
Yeah, the cheaper of the two I've got was $129 if I'm remembering correctly (I think the other was around $137). At $109 it's hard to beat in a price/quality comparison.

For the amount of ripple that thing's got, you'd be hard pressed to find a PSU of equivalent quality under $200. The SSZ560 is server grade hardware in a desktop package.

:bang head

I bought a present for my mum for christmas, cause it was on sale

my new budget is 80$ w/ shipping

:bang head

80 bucks w/ shipping is a very tight budget. i suggest waiting for your next paycheck.

Looking at your sig your power draw really isn't that crazy but i suppose going for a 500 watt unit would give you room to upgrade. (a quality 400 watt unit should of had no problems with your sig)

Modular in your price range would be the Sunbeam NUUO 550 watt unit.-$65

or for non modular you could look at the Enhance 500 watt 80+ unit for -$69

The sunbeam nuuo looks very nice, but it doesn't look very high quality, and sunbeam has always seemed like a junky company to me. Does anyone have experience with sunbeam power supplies, or even their products in general?

I would go with the Enhance 5150gh, for the price ($76 shipped if you follow a pricewatch link) you can't get a better performing PSU with good quality caps imho. Sure its not shiny, nor does it have modular cabling (overrated imho), but it does supply good clean power, and does so efficiently.

i was feeling cheap, so i went with a sunbeam/gasegears modular pitbull, 450w.

46.26$ shipped:attn:

edit: i'll post pics when i get it, sometme later today (nov28)

I got the power supply today, and after putting it in my comp and pressing the power button, the same thing happened. THe computer turned on for a sec, than turned off. I tried with only the mobo cable in, and it turned on and stayed on. I tried with the mobo cable and all the 4-pin molexes, and it worked. I tried with the processor cable, and it didn't work. I tried putting in everything but the processor power cable, then plugging it in while the comp was running, but the second the cable touched the processor power socket on the mobo, there was a tiny spark, and the whole comp, power supply, mobo, etc turned off. I tried my processor in my brothers computer, and it worked

What should i do?

Something is shorting out that mobo. You're gonna have to go back the starting point with the new psu. Also it's gonna be the "process of elimination" game:

Remove mobo and all parts from case
Install the following while keeping mobo out of case:

Cpu with cooler
1 stick of ram
Video card
and psu

No need for hdd's or roms

Power on and hit the DEL key to get into bios.

If you get to this point without it shutting off, then you know there's something shorting out the mobo in the case.

You can also test other components by shutting down and swapping ram sticks, and moving the ram in different slots. Try 1 of the hdd's ( if you have more than 1) also the cdroms (dvd roms/RW's). This will rule out defective parts. Again do this with the mobo outside of the case. Be sure to place the mobo ontop of a non-conductive surface.

Hopefully you should find the culprit. Good luck.

Nebulous makes some good suggestions, I would put the mobo on the anti-static cover that it came in and test the system out of the case.

Also DON'T PLUG POWER CABLES WHILE MACHINE IS RUNNING. This can only end in bad.

My experience in automotive electronics (Nissan technician) suggests that some circuitry somewhere is fried. If your computer was on and you were running SuperPi for ten minutes, then you (I can only assume) were not shaking the case around in any way. This indicates that you probably don't have a short caused by a loose connection (if it was just sitting there than how would it come loose without any movement?) or a chafed wire shorting to ground against the chassis (again, if the wires inside are all stationary then it seems very unlikely that one could suddenly rub through its insulation and short to ground).

It seems more likely to me that some circuitry is shorted. I'd remove your motherboard and scrutinize it (front AND back) for any scorch marks, burst capacitors, etc. Smell it, while you're at it. Fried circuitry boards have a very distinct stench. The burn marks can be hard to see, so you have to look carefully. I easily spend 5-10 minutes looking over fried Nissan ECMs and they're only about one-fifth the size of an ATX mobo.

If you don't see anything there, check all your other cards/peripherals.

i tried my mobo, out of the case, with regular aircooling, absolutely nothing but mobo, cpu, RAM, and power supply

same problem

im going to look it over for scorches now

I looked hard, and i let my dad have a look (he knows a hella lot about computers and electronics in general), but neither of us found anything. I've come to the sad conclusion that its fried =(. Currently using a 2.8 Northwood and an old mobo i had laying around =/ Pic of my temporary rig

On the brighter side, the PSU is absolutely gorgious - you cant really see it from these pics, but the black mirror finish looks absolutely badass.

Yes, that is my 500$ (no joke) processor in the backround, lying belly up on top of my case DSCF2555.jpg

it could be the motherboard is just fried and the cpu is still going.

have you tried running the cpu in another mobo?
