Aluminum and copper...

Its always better to have copper.. it transfers more.. If you have aluminum fins and copper base, the copper base will heat up more than with copper all...

Thermal transfer for copper is 401J/molK
And Al is 237J/molK
which means its almost double...
And forgot to mention the price you pay for copper. That is about 75 bucks in rads.

They were painted!?!? I bet they can cool the water better if they werent painted.
The color black is know to absorb heat quicker than any other color. So I would guess that a black rad might be a good thing:cool:

Many people have said that black absorbs heat, but that is usually when light is shining on it. So when you have the radiator out and is being shined on by light, wouldnt that make the radiator hotter than cooler? As for painting it balck to achieve that effect, I think that it is totally wrong. The layer of paint would hinder heat transfer from the fins to the air because the paint is acting like a layer of insulator.

Hey racecar, do you have a similar rad that isnt painted? If so, would you be willling to test out to see if the paint makes a diff?

Hehe... well, the BlackIceXtreme is highly engineered, honestly I don't think they would paint it without reason.

The reason for painting is durability and looks...

Sometimes looks sells more... Painting is a finish... YOu might say... Look at this... I payed X or Y money and its not even painted or so...

I chose my rad when it was built not to be painted...

Hmm...looks over performance? Id go with performance. I wouldnt pay that much money for a rad that is painted which could hinder performance.

I just ordered one on friday. Ill tell you guys how well it works. I currently have the stock Blizzard Z4 radiator. So ill compare and contrast the two. The reason I got the black ixe is because its gunna be mounted inside of my pc. I dont wanna have a radiator outside of my box. Keep it incognito :)

think of it like this:

car manufactures have has about 150 years to create a good heat exchanger. they have and can be found very cheaply

watercooling has, however had only around 3 years to develop a radiator, the result: like a heatercore but smaller and more expensive that uses the heater core designs. i would chose a heatercore any time

I don't think I would ever find a comparison rad like this one not painted unless I have this one striped. And I wont do that.

As far as the paint being an insulator, I doubt the is any insulating properties just due to the fact that the coating is less than 1 mill thick, in most cases. Now I could see the paint hindering the performance if the paint was not properly sticking to the rad. Or if you went crazy while painting the rad and put on multiple layers of paint causing a high mill buildup.

This may not apply to our systems, because of the low heat source, but most all auto rads are painted black for the sole purpose to help absorb the heat into the fins where the wind will take it away. A long time ago, I also found an article on the net about setting up race/performance cars, in the cooling section, mentioning the same affect and why it was good to paint the rad black.

The watercooled sys in my sig performs very well and has a old cheap 4 pass cpufx waterblock. My ambient temps are 20c and full load temps are 29.7 according to the probe sitting next to the cpu core. If you look at my case, you will see there are no fans on the rad. I have set up my case with a low pressure/vaccuum using only 1 120mm fan along with the 2 fans in the psu. The rad is so large and I did not want multiple fans or have to do any shrouding when I thought of the idea of using the rad as the main source of air intake with a low pressure/vaccuum style case. Worked better than I thought it would

To be honest, most heatercores and rads look pretty crappy in raw form. I don't think it would hinder the performance of the rad by painting it any color you want, just as long as you only put on enough color to cover the rad and no more.

I can already tell you that you will get a vast improvement with the black ice over that cheap little alluminum piece of junk that is considered a rad. I have one of those mounted to my wall of shame.

If you are mounting the rad inside the case, make sure to get a good source of fresh ambient air to blow across the rad for best results. I'm sure you know but just a reminder.

Well anywayz, it just came to my mind. What exactly IS painted on the black ice xtreme? Surely not the fins right? How could it possibly hinder heat dissipation when only the case is painted? Apart from the basic question, if that paint would make any difference at all, which doesn't seem to be exactly clear from what I read. ;)

By the way, maybe some of you guys know the mig momma rad? As far as I know, it's been outperformed by the black ice xtreme. And that one was basically a standard heatercore, just with the right barbs on it. Not completely sure about it, so don't be too hard on me.
