I just got the AOpen AK 33 mobo and Duron 850.
Started off with system freezing in less than 10 seconds (even in the bios settings). After several attempts the system seemed to have totally died. No display or system beeps nothing. CPU fan spins and drives work though. Is the CPU dead? And how the hell did I blow it, I did use a heatsink and fan.

Are you certain the HSF wasn't mounted backwards. The bottom of the HSF has an area on one edge that is machined back and that is to go to the side of the ZIF socket which has the hinge. You did use thermal compound in a thin layer between core and HSF right? Did you unlock the L1 bridges? If so are you sure they don't cross?

These are the obvious things that leap to mind. Do you have access to another socket A mobo/chip to check what is damgaed?

Hope this helps.
