Here's the scenario:

My friend had an old dell computer. He bought a mobo, psu, cpu, and vid card as an upgrade. We used the old hard drive, ram (2100 and 2700), and old cd rom drives, both in working condition before we made the switch. After we got everything hooked up we saw the Asus startup screen and jumped for joy. But, here's the kicker. The second you see the windows xp loading screen, the monitor turns blue and says that windows has detected an error.

Question: Is this due to the old "dell" version of windows on the hd? Is it hardware related? Thank you so much. Whoever helps, thank you much.

Yes, unfortunatly it is setup for the chipset of the old motherboard you were using. The new one you have is totally different and requires it's own appropriate drivers.

Best way to fix it is is a fresh install of Windows.

Its the dell harddrive, did you leave the old OS on there? im pretty sure that when you switch the mobo you have to reinstall the OS and I dont know if you can format one of those dell hdd's to reinstall an OS, I know my HP harddrive is like that I couldnt use it as my master drive.

Okay. First thing, I guess. I will try a fresh instal of windows. If that doesnt work (which I honestly dont see why it wouldnt) I guess it is new hdd time.

I guess some machines are different. I formatted my daughters HP with XP Pro and it worked. She lost access to the recovery partition forever though.
