Ive been an AMD man forever, and now im considering Intel for my new rig, ill eventually get a core 2 duo, but i want to start with a pentium d 802 and overclock the crap out of it., is there a motherboard where i can just pop out the 802 and the pop in the conroe chip and have it work?

There seems to be alot of chipset issues and revisions and stuff with intel, and im not used to that casue ive been on AMD so long..a little help?

Any of the Intel 965, Intel 975X, or Nvidia i680SLI boards should work. If you want a great budget board (budget in terms of onboard peripherals, not in terms of overclockability) I say get the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, I have one and it rocks. If you want more onboard features, ASUS has some great boards out, and if you want the best money can buy the Nvidia chipset boards seem to do everything, though I don't know about specific models.

By 802, you mean 805?

As HyperlogiK said we need to know your budget before we can recommend you a motherboard. AS there are three different price brackets and we also need to know which conroe you'll be going for as that will also help but I have a feeling you'll want either a 965 or a Nvidia i680 board (<- Note I've never used anything but Intel chip sets but that looks like a winner so far.)

sorry i meant 820, im trying to built a cheap dual core pc right now, and i know the 820 is good for overclocking, so i wanted to pick one of those up, then get a cheap mobo that will be able to overclock it decent.

Forget about conroe right now, i think when im ready to do that uppgrade, ill just build a new rig.

so i just need suggestions for a cheap board for the 820.

The 805 or 915 are probably a better bet for overclocking, the 805 has a higher multiplier and the 915 is on a 65nm process and has more cache. However since the uber cheap (~$100) Core 2 Duos are out very soon now (supposedly the beginning on January) it could be worth just waiting.

i might be mistaken, but havent core 2 duo's been out for a while?..infact im looking at them right now on newegg...
edit, nevermind, you said uber cheap...

yeah it's the e4300 that you might be most interested in, I'm swapping my 920 for one when they come out, but it's so soon now, you might be best just waiting.

like they said go with a 805/915 since you looking for the cheap route get the gigiabyte 965p-s3 or biostar tforce 965pt, your looking at either $115 or $104.

Personally, I'd go with the Biostar TForce 965P-T. People are getting 500fsb easily. I just got one and I am testing it as we speak.

cool, what about budget graphics card?, im thinkin 7600gt

i had a 7900gt on my last rig, and really didnt use it enough for what i paid for it.

Any board that you can support that would run core 2 duo in it, 965 or 975 boards.

i would reuse the 7900gt if you still have it but other wise a nice cheap card would be a 7600gs/gt, the BFG 7600gs on newegg is $88.

A C2D is only like 80 bucks more than an 820. Why not save up a few weeks and get the C2D? I think you would be glad you did!
