I was forced to do a clean re-install of Windows 10 after a failed update.
I did a simple format of ONLY my C drive partition first before my re-install.

I can boot into my desktop successfully but ONLY after I first boot into BIOS and manually select my startup drive in the Boot list.
I then do a save-exit and can launch my desktop as usual.

The next time I restart (without entering BIOS first) my PC just hangs, fans whirring and a black screen.

Any help or feedback appreciated!!

Does your OS drive have for non-standard partitions [ie not ones that the OS creates for itself?]

Sounds like a borked bootloader. I thought you need to delete all those tiny windows os partitions and let the nee os build new ones.

From CMD...try....

Bootrec / fixmbr
Bootrec / fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

I'm thinking the other guys are right. Is this an OEM computer? Like a Dell, HP, ASUS, etc? Since OEM machines haven't shipped with Windows installer disks in ages, they have a special boot loader and hidden partitions with the OEM image of the OS. If you install Windows from an external source, E.G. USB stick or DVD, it installs but the bootloader gets borked.

If you have an OEM machine and you're installing form an external drive, Install again but this time, remove ALL partitions. You should find that everything will work.

NOTE: If you need to save data on this drive and you have another computer, first temporarily install your drive in the other computer to copy data off. Things like your Desktop folder, Pictures, Documents, etc..
