Hi guys im looking to make a PC that will play FFXIV on full settings that will also leave room for me to upgrade. I really used to be in to pcs. I recently fried my laptop so I want to make a desktop. I need to know if the parts I have chosen are compatible Imay have missed something and what my needs would be as far as power and cooling went. I do plan on doing a Xfire or SLI setup in near future.

ASUS Rampage III Formula Rog X58 DDR3 ATX LGA1366 3PCI-E16 X-FI Motherboard $292.24

Intel Core I7 875K Quad Core LGA1156 2.93GHZ Hyperthreading 8MB Cache Unlocked Processor $355.37

ASUS Radeon HD 5850 DirectCU TOP 765MHZ 1Gb GDDR5 4.5GHZ DVI HDMI Display Port DX11 PCI-E Video Card $289.12

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM $95.37

Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1333C9 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 9-9-9-24 Core i7 Memory Kit $101.71 (I believe this mobo supports 1600 only as O.C? Does that mean I need to get the 1333?

and $30 for DVD TOTAL 1240.46 TY all.

:welcome: to the forums.. as for "budget" build.. you must have a way different meaning for budget than most.. 1200+ is a pretty big budget!

your mobo/cpu are not compatible.. you have a x58 mobo and a p55 chip.. get the i7 930 or i7 950 (LGA1366 not LGA 1156).. also if you have a microcenter near you the 950 should be like 200-250 bucks pickup

memory should be fine, lower cas rating is better, but c9 is ok.. and if hte board supports 1600 OC it means you can get the 1600 not the 1333, but the 1333 will work fine too.. you just may not get it up to 1600

if you want to overclock at all past 3.6 you may want to invest in an aftermarket cooler for the cpu as these things are heat monsters.. the top end air coolers cost about 60-80 depending (meghalem/noctua/true)

The 1333 is not a necessity. It does mean you would be limited though and if you want to do 1600 you should get 1600 memory. Other than that looking good.

as far I know that mobo supports 2200(OC), besides that CPU is 1156 and the mobo is 1366, you need to decide it, i7 9xx would be the chose, maybe you can get a cheaper black caviar and better ram

Thankyou for the heads up. I really dont know anything about PSU's with a possible XFIRE in the near future how big of a PSU will I need? 1000? 1200? less? Could anyone suggest a brand or a specific PSU? As far as the GPU goes do you think I could get anything better for that price? Its been years since I was looking to get a PC so I am out of the loop.

If you`re planning SLI or CF, corsair tx750 or the modular series, I don`t know if the 650tx can handle cross of 5870 o gtx470

You know what that would make sense. I think I will do that.

:bang head 1366  OOPS. Still looks like a fine setup but I failed to put 2 and 2 together:bang head All fine incompatible components:(

Hey thank you for the welcome guys. I really used to be in computers but I began to have a problem with painkillers. 200 dollars a day for the last10ish years. I did finaly kick them and have lots more money now to play with

1} Something I dont understand is say my GPU says 500w in the box. I plan on getting a second card for XFire or SLI. Would I not need a minimum say 1200? 1000 for th two GPU? Or does it just not work like that. Ty in advice.

I think 1200 or 1000 is overkill, with a 750W is enough

Ok thank you for the reply, I really appreciate everyones help. It is truly nice to not get made fun, and have many people willing to help. I have found that other boards would just call you a noob and to stfu,

I am looking to save some money at the start, my next question is if I keep everything at the start stock and not overclock. Also., iff I get a half decent HAF tower, will I be able to get away with getting the CPU cooler and GPU cooler at a later date and not OC?

Also can you over clock the I7-950? If so how well? The reason I ask this, is because I was wondering why they labeled the I7-875k "unlocked"?

yes, you can wait til get a cpu cooler for OC, even the CM 212+ will work fine (but there is more/better in the market)

Sorry, but I can´t OC the 950, I don´t have mucho knowledge to do it, mmmm but many people do it here like their making a breakfast (not a good analogy:rofl:) the i7-875k is the answer of INTEL for the black edition of AMD, unlocked means it has better OC capabilities (multiplier unlocked) if i¨m not wrong, but is 1156 socket and you´re are looking for 1366

Ty for the response :) This gets me thinking. I am really starting to think about getting an AMD chip. I have a month before I order the parts I want to wait until after christmas or maybe very early in the new year. I must admit growing up with intel truly has me biased and I do not like it, I am able to look objectivley at many things in life lol but some things im as stubborn as a mule :( I guess its back to the drawing boards for me.

Intel undoubtedly performs better then AMD. And FFXIV is EXTREMELY CPU heavy, your going to want Intel. AMD is better price/performance, but it's frankly just not powerful enough for that game.

The i7-9xx overclock extremely well, I have an i7-920, which has the lowest base clock out of all of them (2.66 GHz), and mine sits permanently at 3.8GHz, which is quite an increase.

This is something around what I would do with your budget:
