Hey guys......I currently have a voodoo 5 5500 and I am getting a GF4TI4600 for christmas but I can't wait that long.....I need something real cheap to hold me over because my voodoo just aint doing the trick......I can spend around 50 bucks.......I was looking at the GF2 MX 400 with 64mb of ram just to hold me over until christmas.......And how does it compare to a voodoo 5??? Is it any better.......Of course the drivers will be because geforce makes new ones and voodoo went down the drain but will i see a difference in games??? thx guys......any other video card you would suggest for $50 or less???

Your voodoo5 with the right tweaks and some 3rd party drivers and alos a nice OC will definetly beat those cheap geforce2mx's.

The voodoo5 was made to compeat with nvidia's geforce2, so its better thana nything around $50....just wait tilll christmas :D

with the right drivers your voodoo should be faster/better than any gf2 card out on the market right now. I would wait for Christmas, afterall it's only a month and a half away! :D

looking at my chart:D , you can get a Radeon LE or Geforce2 GTS for around 50$ it should be a decent bit better in newer games, but i wouldnrt suggest it for just two months, you should rather install Win98SE and just holdover until christmas

Hey guys........Thanks a lot........I've decided to wait until christmas and get a realy good video card.......But untill then.......I want to learn how to tweak and fool around with my voodoo 5.......I just custom built a case for myself with realy has great cooling........Or at least I ran 3dmark2001SE 2 times and it didn't lock up and I played half-life and other LAN games with my friend at a lan parrty for like 8 hours straight and it didn't lock up........So my cooling is fine but i can only get it to like 173 fdor both the clock speed and the memory.......The default for the card is 166.......How can I get more??? thx guys.......

Just get the patch that unlocks the overclocking part of the 3dfx control panel. That'll let you overclock the card like crazy.

I'm not sure where you can get it, just google for voodoo drivers, and I'm sure you'll find something.

I kinda doubt that. The most basic GF2 GTS, Pro, Ti, or Ultra would probably beat it. Especially a GF2 Ultra.
The core on a v5 is 166 and the mem isnt much better either right? The Ultra runs at 250/450. My Ti is running at 270/460.

I say As long as hes not using WinXP or WIn2k something like Win98se with his voodoo5, it will beat the geforce 2 ultra, 3dfx nevermade drivers for winxp or win2k for the voodoo cards, they are all third party, which why they dont perform to well...at least thats what a guy told who owned several voodoos...

These are benchs from just a GTS 64mb. This card is MUCH slower than an Ultra or Ti, but even at these speeds the V5 gets beaten pretty badly....
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1263&p=10

The GTS is clocked at 200/333 versus the Ultra at 250/450 or even the Ti at 250/400. The V5 is clocked at 166/333<-effectively.
In terms of filrate the V5 does 667M, GTS does 1600M.

So I think the if the V5 surrenders to the GTS, I doubt it would anywheree near the Ultra and Ti.
In fact, most of these benchmarks show that even the little GF2 MX beats the V5.

Got Utility!

Hey moorcito........Thanks a lot for the suggestion.......I went to my trusty www.voodoofiles.com and found the utility to enable it......The default clock speed for my voodoo 5 5500 is 166mhz.......What should I start at first......Should I go up to 170 first and then run 3dmark2001 and see if any artifacts appear......Thk guys.........

I think the memory would be the best thing to turn up. I am pretty sure that most cards from that era were bottlnecked by thier memory bandwidth. Thats what mine is at the limit with right now I think :(
Just my 2 cents ;)

one of the reasons that 3dfx went down was because the V5 got spanked fps wise against GTS.....though GTS cant hold a candle to the to the IQ on the V5 and the AA.....

and i really like 3dfx but i´ve test a v5 against a gf2mx400 and can´t really say it was better, i can´t really find good drivers for xp so maybe in win98se, i have that for just a few days and i really like the quality but i can´t make it perform well

Viva 3dfx!! :D
i miss them

Want good drivers for XP?

GET THESE

I use them in my rigs that still sport voodoo's....from the v5 5500 and down...they work great

PS...as far as adjusting the memory on the voodoo....can't be done...its syncronous with the gpu clock...default as stated is 166.....if you raise the clock on the gpu..the clock goes up for the memory as well. Although I have played around with programs that show separate controls for the gpu and memory...they do nothing, and I have several voodoo's ( was big time into 3DFx when they were alive and kicking, still am actually, keeping them alive as long as they are useful.) I tried to use the "separate settings" and they did nothing....either the gpu settings upped the clock in some programs...or the memory settings upped the clock in others, besides, even the tech doc's on the voodoo line ( including the VSA100 line of cards...that would be the v4 and v5 ) states the memory clock is "syncronous" with the gpu.....where all newer cards gpu and memory clock settings are "asyncronous" or "independantly programable".

You could listen to people who tell you to stick with the voodoo 5, but what people dont know is, is that the voodoo 2 will waste any voodoo 5.

A v2? I thought maybe the v3 might compete, but I didnt think the v2 would beat it. Guess ye learn something everyday! How does a v2 beat it though? The v2 was aka bansheee wasnt it?
