hey, i am a total newbie at overclocking but i really want to learn. i am getting ready to build a new system and i want to be able to over clock it. i think im gonna buy an amd barton 2500 or 2800 cpu and an asus mobo (a7v8x) seems to be a pretty popular set up. Can anyone star me off with the basics.... is this a matter of choosing a higher mhz in the bios setup or do i have to make physical mods to the cpu (ive heard of people wrapping wire around prongs and such stuff like that) is that neccessary?
i have an old cpu from work that has a 400 mhz cpu and i changed the setting in the bios to 450.... is this a successful overclock? when i look in windows at the cpu info it now shows a cpu speed of 424 mhz. is this the right track?
Thanx for the help.
ben

this is what i wrote in another post. there are lots of guides here for you to read.

What seems to work for me is i find the FSB limit on my RAM first. Use memtest and lower multiplier settings and do a trial-and-error test until you find the max FSB for you voltage setting. If you want higher FSB, up your VDIMM or loosen your memory timing. Once that's done, up the multipliers slowly and prime. Once it begin to crash, you can leave it there or up the VCORE. When you maxed that out. You're almost there. Next is just tweaking your FSB and multiplier settings and priming and benchmarking it to see what combo's the best. It takes a long time.

Then you're done... unless you think about L12 mods, modded bios, VDimm and Vcore mods.

thanks, i think i'm getting the idea.... i got this old amd 400 to run at 450 without crashing but when i tried to up it to 500 it would'nt boot up... does that mean that this cpu is locked or something... also in my bios when i set it for manual, it automatically sets the bus to 100 and allows me to adjust the voltage and the multiplier only.... so i am at 4.5x 100 and 2.2 vcore.. do i need to up the vcore in order to up the multiplier to 5 or 5.5 to make it boot???
thanx 4 ur help

Well, try to get the 2500+. your multiplier wil probably be locked on 11, the ideal multiplier for an amd. getting a Nforce 2 motherboard would also be more easy for you. these boards are more oc'friendly.

It'll just be a mather of installing and some bios changes. take small steps (5~10 mhz increasements)

good luck

Get a XP-Mobile 2500. That way it will be unlocked and you will have more freedom to overclock it.

If you can, up the vcore. If that doesnt help, you just maxed out the chip. What ram are you using?

thanx for the advice... im not sure what ram i am using other than it is sdram and out of the 320mb that i installed it only checks out at 220mb... there is a 32mb and a 64mb that alone do fine but the 256mb stick only shows 128mb in this board... worked fine in other boards... iguess there is a conflict btwn the two types of ram... maybe someone can shed some light on this 4 me...

By what? 15 bucks? 10 bucks?

Your wasting your time if you buy a locked Barton.

Back here the difference between mobile and desktop cpu's can be up to 30 euro's. that'll be something like...30~35 bucks.

still, you're right. XP-M is a better choice

also... the mobile xps are the only ones unlocked.... right? so the other xps out there have no ability to be o/c'd... right? or can u still o/c the new barton xp, just not as well as a m-xp?

both are capable of reaching +- 2200 mhz. But, as you say, the mobiles are the only ones unlocked. 'older' xp's, like my AQXEA 0324 UPAW, were unlocked. since week 48 in year 2003 (i guess) desktop cpu's are locked

Mobile processors should go even faster because the lower voltages

so when i'm done toying with this old cpu and i start buying the new stuff, it looks like i'll get a bartn xp-m and an asus mobo w/ nforce 2 chipset... but what ram should i get and how does this affect my ability to oc?

well, if your cpu is capable of 220+ mhz fsb; I recommend Corsair XMS or Kingston HyperX. they're both very expensive.

therefor, for people like me who don't have a ****load of money, there are other things on the market like TwinMos or Kingston Valueram.

search for DDR400/PC3200 or DDR433 (?) / PC3500 modules with low-latency's
If you're looking for cheap PC4000 or so, take a look at ADATA.
