Hi, I got an Asus A7N8x DEluxe board, it's got a built in 3com gigabit network port, but it won't go over 100Mbps, it shows up at that speed both on my switch and in the network status screen in Win XP. I tried installing the driver from the disk and also downloading it from the asus website, no luck, any ideas?

You're only as fast as your slowest hardware. To run gigabit you need a gigabit hub/switch, gigabit NIC, and at least CAT5e (Maybe CAT5, YMMV) and most reccomend CAT6. What's your hardware and etc? How far is the network cord?

Wathnix,

I run full Gigabit home network,

Cat6e Cable, Gigabit Dlink DGL-4300 Router, Gigabite NIC Cards.

and even with full Gigabit on everything, its also gonna depend on hard drive speed :) when transfering files.

from my pc to my server, both linked in sig, both run sata 7200rpm 8mb cache hdds.. i get a max network utilization of 7% when transfering a 1.36GB file and it takes 3minutes..

My Hardware Specs:

Bios 24:

You were wondering what I am running for hub/switch, it's a 16 port gigabit switch from 3com, the officeconnect Switch 16 (3c1671600), it's got an indicator light on each port that glows yellow/green/blue for 10MBS/100MBS/1000MBS respectively, on the port with the computer in question it's glowing green, with my two other computers it's glowing blue, and transfering a large file from the two running in gigabit mode is measurably faster than when I send it to the problem computer, also under networking connections, when I look at the status of this port it's running at 100mbs.

I think I'm running cat5e cable to this one, could be just cat5 though, not sure, but it's only 25feet of cable

Any ideas?

just remember having 100mbps does not mean that you are going to get to use 100mbps. I never transferred close to 100mbps but when i got gigabit i got a little over 100. Back when we had 10 would would get much lower than that. Who here sees usb2.0 or firewire working up to their actual potential of 480mbps and 400mbps respectively?

i had to go into settings on my wifes ASUS A8N SLi and force 1000/autonegotiation to get gigabit to work on hers

Cat 5e will support gigabit but regular cat 5 won't. Check for that.

I can confirm that. We are going to be upgrading our network to gigabit here at work, and just 6 inches of Cat 5 cable will downgrade a connection to 100Mbit. That would be the first thing I would check.

Mr. Guvernment, it's an integrated NIC; bchur83, yes, I've tried it in both and I am sure it's plugged into the gigabit port now, I'm going to try checking the bios settings but can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to check for cat5 vs. cat5e? I installed these cables awhile ago and may have made the mistake of buying a plain vanilla cat5. But shouldn't the status dialog in my network places still show as a gigabit instead of 100mbs?

Update. I plugged a different computer into the cable in question and it's working at gigabit speed, so now it looks for sure that it's a computer problem and not a cable problem, any ideas?

try forcing from windows. network connections, local area connection, properties, configure, advanced, in mine its called speed/duplex settings..see if you are given the option to force 1000 mbps auto

Smokey: no, I am not given the option to force 1gigabit, any ideas?
