I am trying to load w98 to my new Maxtor 40 so that i can then use my W2K Pro upgrade and upgrade it.

never had a problem before. worked fine when I re-did everything on my 13.6 hd 2 weeks ago. now the whole system is unstable, crashing before it barely gets the W98 loaded. will not let me finish install right.

if I swap back the old 13.6 everything works fine. mostly.

i have cleared Bios and erased the 40 and started over 5 times now.

what the heck is the deal?

W98 to W2K Pro OS
AK35GTR 266A
256 Samsung pc 2700

my ddr and board are 2 weeks old. worked fine until Sunday. then I wanted to put in the new 40G Maxtor. ****ed on ever since.

Mike:(

You should be able to boot from the W2K Pro update and when it prompts for the previous OS put in the 98 disk and it should install clean. As to the BSODs, make sure everything is connected properly and if you get any more, write down the codes, especially the hexadecimal codes(numbers and letters between 0 and F, like 0x0000001A) as it'll be easier to track down the problems. In 2K, the BSODs are at least easier to translate and happen much less.

Try using one stick of memory. Switch em around if one doesnt work. Memory is usually very bitshey about installing an OS.

no overclocling done. i only had 1 stick and so i went out and got another to see if the ddr was bad.

results were basically the same.

no longer have the board. now have ab 8K3A non-raide.

I did however get a stick of 256DDR at the price of a 128 stick!!!

dummy at cpu store sold me wrong thing and didn't know it. i am not taking it back. looked like a used stick of Nanya DDR.

thanks!

mike
