Alienware Computer
I bought system back in May 2000
Asus K7V Slot A
AMD Athlon 700 512 L2 Cache
384MB PC133
Windows 98SE
ATX midtower 300watt power supply
Stock system setup including cooling (1AMD cpu fan on cpu)
(three other case fans) and one in the powersuply.
I Want More Speed out of this system. For all around use.
I am thinking of buying a 900mhz 256 L2 cache chip for $85
1 gigs are hard to find and expensive (e-bay) $200
or putting an Gold Finger Device afterburner from Outside Loop Comp.
For Around $15.00 on this 700
Is it worth to over clock my setup or go with the 900?
To use the afterburner or not to?
any thoughts ????
Thanks

It would not cost to much to upgrade to a slota 900 and a goldfinger to overclock but socket processors are way to cheep to overlook. Why don't you sell your old motherboard and cpu on ebay and buy a socket motherboard and chip. Even if you only get $100 for the cpu and motherboard you could tack on another hundred be very close to the cost of a 1.2 athlon and a decent motherboard. It's really worth the thought, especially if you want to upgrade more down the road. If you don't want to sink the time and money into selling your stuff and buying new parts, I would recommend a goaldfinger without the athlon 900.

I think for slot A athlons it depends if it is a classic version or a thunderbird version. The thunderbird version have the ddr bus I belive.

I overclocked my slot a t-bird 900 to 1000mhz with my old 7ix gigabyte motherboard. This board was like the first motherboard to come out for the slot a. I bought it for 450bucks with a slot a 600mhz classic in OCT99 and i just bought a slot a t-bird april 2 01 and a gfd for 150 bucks. My computer is stable as a rock with the amd 751 chipset. Pretty good huh. I recently just bought a thermaltake fan and a 300wat aopen Powersupply and some crucial ram. I am thinking about buying the iwill kk266 and 1.33 and a fan so it might come out to 280, but im not sure if going up 500 mhz from 1000 is worth it. Tell me what you guys think
thanks
