not sure if this is the place for it or not, but here goes.

Has anyone tried putting a 1 DIN cd player in their computer case...
i have an extra one laying around and thought it might make a good mod, but want to know if anyone has tried this setup before. Will it work? were there any issues that complicated it?
also my radio is a pioneer deh-6500, any opinions of how it would look in a comptuer case would also be highly apreciated.

edit: also has anyone tried a fold out dvd in their case??? it's kinda costly but it would me impressive, and cool imho.

Thought about that as well, dont never went beyond that. It would be cool to see and do, and I'm sure very complicated. The biggest problem I can think of is how to actually wire up the sound, unless you ran the speaker leads to speakers outside of the case. Hmm, may have to investigate this further......

you can hook up a car deck in your cpu, with just a few things to consider:
1) will your power source handle the extra draw?
keep in mind that the power usage of a car stereo fluctuates
greatly, particularly at high volumes.
solution: stable power source and in line fuse.

2) since this is an overclockers forum, I'll assume that we all
understand the negative effects of heat in a cpu case. with this
in mind, remember that your stereo generates a lot of heat for
a small unit. And as it heats up performance suffers.
solution: heat shielding

if you keep these couple issues in mind, you can actually hook it up with less trouble than you may think.

as far as the actual hook up is concerned, I made a pci slot hook up for external speakers. it turned out quite nice.

if anyone wants to know how to do this, just PM me. I'll try to load pics soon. or maybe a how to?

taken into consideration.... this one would be on my non oc box... the slow box ;)

i would have a secondary power source installed (i have several laying around)

and the wiring i may can overcome... i'd wire it in to make the computer an auxilary input, and the RCA out's i'd wire back into my sound card. I'd have to tinker with it though. when i actually come down to doing this i'll post some pics... it'll be all BLUE and neat.

Why not just make a new lexan case for it and add speakers and a headphone jack? That way, no extra clutter inside your case. Maybe you could put your spare PSU and a temp display in there with it?

I think that would be cool. I dont think I have seen one done in along time. I think I may have seen one like 2 years ago but there was no info on it.

1baddmodder - I think a how to would be pretty cool. If you could do it I think that would be great. Also, can I see a pic?

Just an idea for the heat issue... If you are only going to use the low level outputs on that Pioneer; you might want to think about taking the STK modual out. that is the sound amplifier in the radio and the cause of all your heat.

I like both the idea of building an external box for the deck, and running the deck without the amplification. just keep in mind that on most low output leads/decks, that they carry a higher voltage through the rca leads, as they are intended to be externally amplified. so you're pretty much stuck running either at line level and bypassing the amplification circuit, or finding an older deck with a low voltage output, if you intent to hook it to your sound card. Personally I just used a pci slot cover, and used speaker hookups and ran the speaker leads right out the back of by case. also the deck i used has an imput circuit that i spliced into. ;)

I'll try to submit a how-to if I can get much feedback. Also I don't have that case anymore (sold it on ebay). but if i can get ahold of a scanner i'll try to upload some old pics off of hard copy.

you would need a pretty beefy supply or a pretty low end deck, most psu i have seen dont have more than 20 amps on the 12 volt line, my gf's deck i bought her for christmas will draw around 20 amps, that is without the efficency of the deck taken into account, if it is 50% efficient(thats a pretty conservative estimate), it will draw 40 amps. now that is when it is putting out 60x4, which would be full volume, so i guess at low volime, it would be ok.

well, he did say he had a "few" PSU's sitting around. Assuming he was just going to use 2 of them, he could just pick up a couple of diodes, and wire the 12V lines from both PSU's together.

a cd deck will only draw that kinda power if it is amplified... if he is just going to use the low level outputs he doesnt need more that 20 amps. also in doing this with low levels into his aux in on the sound card he can take out the amplifier (the STK module located in the rear of the radio; and mounted to a heat sink) entirely thus reducing the heat considerably. Oh and 1baddmodder if you need to add something to your post you can just hit the "edit" button in the lower right corner of your post. Welcome to the forums!!

good lookin out caddyg1 (can always smell the newbies, huh?)

when i did this mod I took 2 psu's and stacked them in an external case(custom) to power the deck only. my friend wired this up, i'll ask him how later. i used the same pci slot cover for the speakers and power. sorry i forgot to mention it before. we also rigged the psu case so that it had several different power leads accessible from the front, so it could also be used as a test unit. (an idea from the pages of overclockers.com):)

interesting... i smell a good priject coming up.

hey anyone think i'd be able to get the display on the radio to scroll some text like folding stats or something??? this could get pretty in depth, but would be worth it imo...
