When I start my computer with a CD in the drive I crash when I try to switch out that CD for a new one and access the new CD. Seems like it marks the CD that’s in during startup a startup drive device and therefore needs it. The problem doesn't happen when the CD drive is empty during boot, or if I just leave the original CD in the drive. My computer info, copied from my Aopen log (I’m not holding my breath waiting for them to help me. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks.

hmm, have you tried a new cdrom to see what happens. Also try a "dirty install" of windows. A dirty instal f.y.i. is when you just do a reinstal of windows over the old instalation. You don't delete anything, or format. Just reinstall. It will keep your settings, and while no ideal, is a good idea and usually corrects probs like this. Also, what temps are you running?? High temps can do weird things like this.

Just Slap me if I dont make any sense to you, As I know nothing about win2k. But do you have Auto insert enabled? And have you tried a new ASPI layer?

probobly long shots but worth a try.

I know I use to have a Creative Labs CDRW that use to give me similiar problems every now and then when Auto Insert was disabled. But this was with Win98SE.

Seeing as how you don't have IDE 2 populated, set the cdrom in IDE2 as a master....and if you still have problems, disable dma transfers.
Don't know if it will help, but it couldn't hurt

actually i think i remember hearing rumblings about that causing probs. Worth trying it out. especially the move to IDE2.

Wow, great ideas. I had the CD drive on the IDE 2 last month, still had the problem. I'm installing RAID next week, so will put it back there for the heck of it. I'll try out all the other ideas. Didn't think of a dirty install of Win2k. Good idea.

I'll have to hunt down auto insert. How do I make a new ASPI layer? New stuff to me.

If all else fails I'll disable dma transfers.

Thanks for all the ideas. I hope this works.

Are all of the Win2K updates that MS supplies online installed on your machine?

Thats a good point win2000 Service Pack 1 might just solve your problems..
If not here's another blind alley to consider, I have found with windows sometimes the cdrom drive shows up as having the last disk in it even after you have changed disks, when you say crash do you mean getting a blue screen? because this sometimes causes a blue screen saying it can't find the info on the disk you had in the drive previously and the only way to solve it is to put the disk back in the drive let it find it close the app then take the disk out.

I've got the latest Win2k service pack and updates loaded. Newby, that's exactly what it does, but I don't even have to be in a program for that to happen. I could just try to look at the files in Windows. And it only happens when I boot with the CD in the drive. Like Windows is the app using it. Strange. Yes, it blue screens if I do anything else but replace the original CD.

I forgot to reply to an earlier idea, my CPU temp is 19c, 24c under load. So probably isn't that. I want to figure out how to make another ASPI layer and check auto insert. That and a dirty install of Win2k. Tonight I'll try that if they let me go home from work. Thanks all for the great ideas. It's really appreciated. I'll let you know what happens.

When you do check can you post the programs that are running at start up?

The programs running at startup are:
Adobe Gamma
BlackIce
Winamp Agent
Norton Virus
smmss.exe
csrss.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
lsass.exe
svchost.exe
spoolsv.exe
blackd.exe
defwatch.exe
svchost.exe
rtvscan.exe
regsvc.exe
MSTask.exe
WinMgmt.exe
iexplore.exe
mspmspsv.exe
vptray.exe
mapisp32.exe
Winampa.exe
vpexrt.exe

Fixed it! I de-installed the CD drive and removed something called ACPI Fixed Device. I rebooted and let them reinstall. It worked. Strange problem. Now I'm afraid to add my RAID and move my CD drive off the ATA 66 add on board. At least I know where to ask for help. Thanks guys.
