i remember the other day reading a post , i don't know who it was but they were talking about running windows and seti from a cd without a hard disk, anyone know anything about it?
i can bring another machine up if this can be done.

Oh man, if this can be done and you find out how to do it, then please post back how.

thanx a bunch

i know nothing at all about linux but, i guess i'm going to learn, there's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here!!!

if you have any pointers Sweet Polly Purebred would love to hear them, just leave them with me , i'll relay them to her!

Well when I saw this thread at first my mind went to knoppix.

Anyhow I think knoppix would be great option to incorporate seti in it.
For those who dont know Knoppix 3.9 is OS that runs from CD and supports a lot of hardware. On my pc it lets me go online as well, meaning if someone knows how to add seti  mmmmmm that would be sweet.
Just a thought.

Check out the article we published about a diskless seti farm:
http://www.ocsetiteam.com/other/cluster.htm I would imagine with some effort we could port this to the boinc platform. Of course the easy thing to do is get something like a knoppix disk and save your boinc info to a thumb drive.

If anyone has some knowledge with ISO files, it would be awesome to get a cd that all you've got to do is pop it in and that computer runs SETI ;)

it would be even better to be able to take a mobo , psupply, cd-rom out of that box of junk in the corner , put a cd in it with a fan blowing on it and start crunching without cases and fans and all that other stuff

Yes I can a test to crunching in a cardboard box as well ;). No monitor just used remote software to access it. I did have a hdd but only because it was kicking around and just CPU fan.

you can also go to the boinc forums , i have a thread running over there also on this and another member suggested possibly trying it using "BART PE", he seems to think that type of thing would be best because it gives you internet access.i was going to look into pe because he said he had disk he was able to access and recover data from that was not avaible any other way , the disk was dead and i have one like that so i was going to try it
i was also thinking of a trying to load everything onto a thumb drive , i've never used a thumb drive because i've never had a need, prices on them have come down alot, i don't know if they can be used as harddisk sort of thing.
