my cd rom for some reason just stopped bieng recognized by windows but dos still recognizes it! I see two possible options 1. a reformat and a clean install, 2. i might possibly be able to download drivers for it but im not sure if thats right or not. this is kinda urgent so all help is appreciated. thx for the replies

you don't usually need drivers to get a drive working, unless it's really exotic and weird.

What I would do is double check that Windows has the correct drivers installed to run the disk controllers, under Device Manager. If you're using a VIA-chipset based mobo, you might want to try installing the latest 4-in-1 driver set.

Did you make any changes to the system around the time the drive disappeared on you?

doesn't sound to me like that could cause a drive to go away. maybe the sound drivers changed something? probably not but it's worth a shot I guess.

did you tell Windows to Detect New Hardware, maybe it could solve the problem on it's own. Hey, wishful thinking :)

When I downloaded Media player 7 my computer lost my cd player. I never could get it regconized again I ended up reformating , because it was time after 3 yrs
