I turned on my computer (HP Pavilion 7940) this morning. I tried to play a game so I popped in the CD into my CDRW drive. Next thing I know, I go into the My Computer folder and my CDRW and DVD-ROM isn't listed. BTW, I have Windows XP Pro.

Anyway, I'm like, "What the hell?" So I go into my Device Manager. I see this:

So then I go into my CDRW and DVD-ROM and see this:

I click on the Drivers tab and saw this:

I clicked on Update Driver but it said it couldn't find any. I tried the Troubleshooting, I uninstalled both my CDRW and DVD devices and reinstalled them. It's still messed up. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I could be wrong in this, but do you have any virus scan software? Have you tried going back to a previously saved file of your OS? Windows Xp has athis feature built in. By the way. If you have been relying on the "firewall" that comes with Xp when online; you weren't protected as well as you were led to believe. If the above is true, go to Zonealarm.com (after you get the problem fixed of couse) and download their free firewall.

1st thing to do is search for those files that are mis-identified as your drivers and delete them right out, then reboot -this may fix it, but it may be deeper, like in ur regestry, cause seems at 1st glance that somehow u have some bad intent done on your machine, see if xp picks up your stuff

if dosent work check and makesure they are still not showing
then try r click on my computer/manage
then open up the device manager go to IDE /ATAPI controllers and
r click on that and click on scan for hardware changes

also try same but expand IDE/ATAPI and click on each channel and search for hardware changes and new drivers

good luck

Well, I uninstalled Easy CD creator 5 Platinum because it wouldn't detect my CD-RW anymore. Then I reinstalled it. This was yesterday. What did your roommate do to fix it?

search and delete the files that contain (search from the start/search box)
the strings that u provided:
cdrw_drivers.JPG
dvdrom_drivers.JPG

you are doing that, because for whatever reason windows has presently set those .jpg files as your drivers, which they are not.
hopefully if u delete them, windows will reinstall and path the correct drivers upon reboot, when you search for new hardware, or when u try again to update drivers

this is the first step in seeing if u can fix this, it is the easy step, and maybe the fix, finding the reason may be the hard part, but if fixed u may not need to
just follow those steps i outlined above 1st, and see if it works
ur just ruling out the easy fix, something u already started when u atempted to change the drivers back

No, no...I'm sorry if it wasn't clear enough. Those JPG files are the screen shots that I took of my Device Properties so you can see what happened. I upped it onto my server to display here.

This same sh*t happened to my inlaws XPpro system right upon installing the latest Via 4-in1 drivers for their MSI mobo. Could not get rid of it anymore, had to completely reinstall...

Thanks to everyone who posted. Special thanks goes to ucfswimmer, I did a System Restore to restore my settings from the day before, and now it works. I can use my drives again!

woohoo...glad i could be of help...seems like easy cd-creator and norton anti-virus are both in the same family and like to go head-to-head with windows xp over who is in charge of what, and in the end its always the user that gets screwed...now, i dont suppose you know anything about the EP-DRO2P3 RAID Controller Card and could be any help to me? ;)
