I remember when the Centrino came out, the the boys on the now defunct show "Screensavers" said it was basically a Celeron chip adapted for wireless and better mobile characteristics.

Somebody educate me... Please?

Centrino is a platform. it is the cpu, the wireless, the chipset, etc...

for a laptop to be a Centrino laptop, it has to have a Dothan, or a Yonah cpu, aka a Pentium M or Core Duo. i'm not sure if the are calling the Core 2 Duo laptops Centrino still.

neither a Pentium M or Core Duo are based off of celerons (but there are celerons based off of the Pentium M).

you can think of a Pentium M as a Pentium III on steroids. and a Core Duo is a dual core Pentium M.

Core 2 Duo is refined, it is loosely based on the Core Duo. it brings many enhancements.

Pentium M (Banias, Dothan) = Centrino
Core Duo (Yonah) = Centrino Duo
Core 2 Duo (Merom) = Centrino 2 Duo

(afaik)

Exactly. The last evolution is Centrino 2 Duo, codename Napa (the first two were Carmel and Somoma). The laptop I'm typing on is one of them. The CPU is a Merom, an evolution of Yonah, itself an evolution of Mobile architecture created in Israel by Intel around 2002. It is an evolution of the P6 architecture of the PIII. For more info:
