On my 340w cheiftec PSU there is a little pluggy thing that is identical in every way to the little 3 pin plug that come on case fans.... its a female connector.

What on earth is it for?!?!?

I can only guess that its for monitoring fan speed in the psu and or regulating the speed of the psu fan.

any ideas?

I have the chieftech/sirtech 300w model. The plug is for montoring the psu fan rpm. These are really good psu's they have a temp controlled fan and give out very stable voltages.
